Refrigerator not defrosting
Posted On: September 12, 2021

Picture this, you open your fridge for a cold glass of milk, and you find ice building up. You start to notice it's running a lot harder than usual, and it's making a lot of noise. This could be an issue with the defroster.

The defroster is the part of the fridge that warms up the cooling unit to remove any ice that has built up. If you find there is a lot of ice building up in your refrigerator, it could be an issue with the defroster. There are a few reasons as to why the defroster stopped working.

  1. Electrical issue: If there is an issue with the electrical board, the fridge will not go into the automatic defrost cycle. If the defrost cycle never goes on, you will find ice building up in your fridge.
  2. Defective sensors and fuse: The sensor in your fridge controls the temperature of the evaporator. And if the fuse fails to shut off the defrost heater, the fuse will blow, and the heater will stop working, causing a build-up of frost.
  3. Defrost timer: The defrost timer controls when the defrost comes on, usually a few times a day. If it stops working, it will not move into the defrost cycle or send power to the defrost heater.
  4. Thermostat: The thermostat monitors the temperature of the coils, and when they drop below the set temperature, the thermostat contacts close to allow power to flow to the heater during the defrost cycle. The heater melts away ice that has built up. If there is an issue with the thermostat, it will not provide any power to the defrost heater.

Large amounts of ice build-up in a fridge can cause it to overwork, and eventually, it could stop working, leading to a lot of money in spoiled foods. And a large mess once everything starts to melt.

Fixing defrost issues can require extra tools and equipment. And unless you know how to use them, it's probably best to call in a professional before you start to play around with them.
