Ruud Appliance Repair

How do you choose the right HVAC system for your home? What's the difference between an air conditioner and a heat pump, and how do I know which system I need? If you're shopping for a new HVAC system, air conditioner, or furnace, then chances are you've probably asked yourself (or Google) those questions. But here at Ruud you're talking to the experts, their HVAC system selection guides below offer a great starting point for choosing the best HVAC system for your home, and once you're ready to find a trustworthy and licensed installer, they have got you covered with Ruud's nation wide network of vetted Ruud HVAC contractors.

Air Conditioner Repair

Ruud manufactures appliances that homeowners have come to trust. Even a trustworthy appliance requires occasional maintenance or repair, however. If you’re in need of Ruud appliance repair from experienced professionals, your local Appliance Helper can help.

Ruud Air conditioner not cooling
If the air filter is clogged, air cannot flow properly through the air conditioner. This greatly reduces the cooling capacity of the air conditioner. In addition, if the air filter is clogged, the evaporator coils will frost over. To remove debris from the air filter, try cleaning the filter. If it is not possible to clean the air filter, replace it.

Ruud Air conditioner fan not working
The dual shaft fan motor (or circulation fan motor) might be defective. The circulation fan motor has two fan blades: one on either side of the motor. On one side, the fan blade draws in outside air over the condensing coil to dissipate the heat. On the other side, the fan blade directs the air over the evaporator coil. The dual shaft fan motor has bearings that can loosen or bind over time. To determine if the motor bearings are defective, wiggle the motor shaft. If the motor shaft is loose, or if it won’t turn at all, replace the fan motor.

Ruud Air conditioner compressor won't run
The temperature control board provides voltage to the fan motor and compressor. If the control board is defective, it may stop providing voltage to the compressor. Control boards are often misdiagnosed. Before replacing the temperature control board, make sure you check more commonly defective parts—particularly the compressor overload, capacitor and the compressor itself. If you are certain that all of the other components are working properly, replace the temperature control board.

Ruud Air conditioner won't turn off
The condenser coils dissipate the heat as the refrigerant passes through the coils. If the condenser coils are dirty, they won’t be able to dissipate the heat as effectively. As debris builds up on the coils, the air conditioner will become less efficient, causing the air conditioner to work harder to cool down. If the coils are significantly dirty, the air conditioner will not be able to maintain the proper temperature, and the compressor will run continuously in an attempt to cool the room. Check the condenser coils to determine if they are dirty. If the condenser coils are dirty, clean them.

Ruud Air conditioner is loud or noisy
When the compressor is wearing out, it generates more noise than usual. When this happens, it is not necessary to replace the compressor—compressors often last for years after they become noisy. However, if you would prefer to have a new compressor, have a licensed professional replace it.

Ruud Air conditioner remote control not working
First, try replacing the batteries in the remote control. If installing fresh batteries doesn’t solve the problem and you can still operate the air conditioner manually, the remote control might be defective. If you think the remote control is defective, replace it.

Furnace Repair

Ruud manufactures appliances that homeowners have come to trust. Even a trustworthy appliance requires occasional maintenance or repair, however. If you’re in need of Ruud appliance repair from experienced professionals, your local Appliance Helper can help.

Ruud Furnace not heating
The igniter gets very hot and glows bright orange to light the gas burner. If the igniter fails or cracks, the furnace won’t heat. To determine if the igniter is faulty, remove the igniter and inspect it for cracks. If the igniter is cracked, replace it. If the igniter is not cracked, use a multimeter to test the igniter for continuity. If the igniter does not have continuity, replace it.

Ruud Furnace is noisy or loud
The blower wheel blows air out of the furnace and through the house. The blower wheel is attached to the blower motor shaft with a set screw. If the set screw is loose, the blower wheel will wobble on the motor shaft, and the wheel will be noisy as it turns. Check the set screw to ensure that it is properly tightened. Next, inspect the wheel for damage. If the blower wheel is damaged, replace it.

Ruud Furnace starts then stops
The flame sensor monitors the burner to detect whether or not a flame is present. If the flame sensor is defective, it might fail to detect a flame. If the flame sensor does not detect a flame, the control board will shut off voltage to the gas valve to prevent the furnace from heating. Sometimes, if the flame sensor is dirty, it will fail to detect a flame. Try cleaning the flame sensor with a fine abrasive pad. If the furnace still doesn’t heat, replace the flame sensor.

Ruud Furnace blower not running
The blower motor blows air through the return vent, past the heat exchanger, and into the home’s venting. First, make sure that power is getting to the motor. If power is getting to the blower motor, but the motor does not run, the motor may be burned out. If the blower motor is burned out, replace it. If the blower motor hums, check the blower fan to ensure that it spins freely. If the blower fan is unobstructed but does not spin freely, replace the blower motor.

Ruud Furnace blower runs all the time
The control board has relays that regulate the voltage to each component in the furnace. If the relay that controls the blower motor fails while it is closed, it will send continuous voltage to the blower motor, causing the motor to run continuously. If the control board is at fault, replace it.

Heat Pump Repair

If you believe your Ruud heat pump requires repairs, it's important to approach the situation methodically and prioritize safety. Heat pump systems are complex, and repairs should be conducted by qualified HVAC professionals. Here are steps you can take if you suspect your Ruud heat pump needs repairs:

Contact Ruud Customer Support:

If your Ruud heat pump is still under warranty, contact Ruud or the authorized dealer from whom you purchased the unit. They can provide guidance on warranty coverage and procedures.

Schedule Professional Service:

If you're experiencing issues that you cannot resolve through basic troubleshooting, it's advisable to schedule a service call with a licensed HVAC technician. They have the expertise to diagnose and repair complex HVAC systems.

Describe the Issue:

When scheduling a service call, provide a detailed description of the issue you're experiencing with your Ruud heat pump. This information can help the technician prepare and troubleshoot more efficiently.

Prepare for the Technician's Visit:

Clear the area around the heat pump to allow the technician easy access for inspection and repairs. Remove any debris, leaves, or obstructions that may impact the unit's performance.

Be Observant:

Before the technician arrives, note any unusual sounds, smells, or behaviors exhibited by the heat pump. This information can be valuable for the technician's diagnostic process.

Discuss Maintenance:

While the technician is on-site, inquire about routine maintenance for your Ruud heat pump. Regular maintenance can help prevent issues and prolong the lifespan of the system.

Common issues that may require professional attention include compressor malfunctions, refrigerant leaks, electrical component failures, and issues with the defrost system.

Remember that working on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems involves safety risks, and repairs should only be performed by licensed professionals. Additionally, if your heat pump is still covered by warranty, attempting unauthorized repairs or modifications may void that warranty.

If you're experiencing problems with your Ruud heat pump, contact a qualified HVAC technician or Ruud customer support for assistance. They can provide accurate diagnostics and perform any necessary repairs.

Water Heater Repair

Ruud manufactures appliances that homeowners have come to trust. Even a trustworthy appliance requires occasional maintenance or repair, however. If you’re in need of Ruud appliance repair from experienced professionals, your local Appliance Helper can help.

Thermocouple
Some gas water heaters have a thermocouple. The thermocouple detects the pilot flame. If the thermocouple does not detect a flame, it will prevent the gas valve from opening.

Gas Valve and Thermostat Assembly
The gas valve opens to allow gas to enter the burner. If the gas valve does not open, the burner will not light, and the water heater will not heat. First, ensure that the ignition source is working properly. Second, ensure that the gas valve has pressure. If the ignition source is working, and the gas valve has pressure, consider replacing the gas valve and thermostat.

Pilot
The pilot ignites the water heater’s gas burner. If the pilot does not light, the water heater will not heat. Sometimes, carbon deposits can build up on the pilot and eventually create a restriction. If the pilot is restricted, try removing it and clearing it with a stiff brush and/or compressed air. If the pilot cannot be cleaned, replace it.

Dip Tube
If the water heater does not heat, the dip tube may have broke or cracked. The dip tube delivers cold water toward the bottom of the tank where it can be heated by the burner.

Draft Inducer Motor
The draft inducer fan motor draws air into the burner and then exhausts it out the flue. As the air flows through the draft inducer assembly, it closes a vacuum switch to signal that proper air flow is present. If the inducer motor is not working properly, the water heater will not heat. Over time, the bearings on the inducer motor wear out. The inducer motor could also have a plugged vacuum port. If the vacuum port is plugged, the motor will not be able to close the vacuum switch, causing the ignition process to stall.

I paid 5500 dollars for the ruud unit to be installed in 2016 , it has broke down every year since, service repair is out of site. Last year it broke down in Aug. (I live on the gulf coast, very hot) I was without air for 2 weeks. Coast around 800 to repair, this year during a cold spell it quit heating, repairman said coil was leaking and would cost around 900 to replace plus 200 for the service call. That is 1200 dollars, what next. If it breaks again I will have it taken out and sit it on my utility to. With a sign that says it is a pc. Of junk and pull it around everywhere.

Installed a Ruud 50 gal electric water heater from Home Depot in March 2017
Installed a Ruud 50 gal electric water heater from Home Depot in March 2017. Came with galvanized input/output isolation nipples factory installed. Connected to my PEX plumbing with brass adapters, using teflon tape and paste. Within one year, started corroding and seeping at galvanized threads. Galvanizing on threads appeared to be extremely thin and did not last. Today (Feb 2019) paid plumber to come replace the nipples. Had to mail order special Ruud extra long nipples - non-standard size not stocked by any of several sizable plumbing supply distributors. They look to be exactly like ones that failed. Will these ones last? Lived in this house 43 years. This is my 3rd water heater. Never a corrosion problem with other isolation nipples. Why couldn't Ruud use good quality, standard length nipples that are locally available?! Disappointed!

The temperatures can really go high in the summer days. You can’t imagine my frustration when my AC broke last summer. For about 2 weeks we had to go without any air conditioning. I was in a rush to get the problem fixed so I got this Ruud but I didn’t know much about the unit. Finally, the problem was solved but then I wasn’t sure the unit would hold up without breaking down. So far so good, haven’t had to do anything except routine maintenance.

Hurray for Ruud. I’m so happy this turned out great. I was skeptical about replacing my air conditioner because the online reviews gave me the impression that there is nothing really worth the trouble out there. I got this Ruud because a friend of mine reassured me of its excellent services. For 7 months now the unit hasn’t given me any problems. Only had to fix it once and that was covered by the warranty.

I am nothing short of satisfied. Ever since I purchased this unit that is six years ago. My initial unit kept on leaking water making my house messy and one had to be alert always. I always called the technician to do repairs who later on recommended to me the Ruud unit. It’s highly efficient without too much cost of electricity. Its price was also quite affordable. Its installation was quite easy. Winters are no longer stressful for us. Ruud has been the furnace I’ve come across so far.

My Ruud furnace is installed in the basement of the house. It is however too noisy and sounds more like a manufacturing room. When purchasing the sales representative assured me that the unit wasn’t any noise. So I thought this was enough reason to raise alarm. On calling the customer care service, they told me otherwise, that this was a usual occurrence. I still have to bear with the noise because I’m not in a position to purchase another right now.

The most unreliable furnace I’ve ever come across. It has failed me in over three winters in which we literary froze. The first failure came when the circuit board had issues. The repairman has already had frequent visits to my house more than the mailman and pizza delivery man comes. I would have rather kept my old furnace instead of getting this Ruud which has been nothing short of a nuisance and less performance. I’m quite sure when replacing it I will not have Ruud among my options.

I’ve owned my furnace for 8 years and I believe I’m still counting. I have never encountered any issues with the machine and I tend to think or negative reviews are all propaganda either by competitors whose intention is to bring down its reputation. Its price is also quite affordable in comparison with other heat furnaces of the same specifications and lower specifications across different brands. I can never compare this to my initial Amana heat furnace which was serviced as frequently as every two months and would definitely recommend this heat furnace to anyone looking to purchase a furnace anytime soon.

We had a few issues within the first year of operation with our water heate
We had a few issues within the first year of operation with our water heater, tripping our breaker and electrician thought he figured out the problem with the unit, despite it being properly installed anyway. Last night upon returning from dinner we walked into our home full of an electrical burning smell. Through elimination the results were that our water heater had blown out its wiring on the front electrical panel, as we could see black smoke all around it and coming from the unit. The breaker had fortunately already tripped from the over load, but we turned it off and cut off the water supply as a precaution. We immediately contacted one of our electricians that is used for our company. He arrived today (following day). I contacted Rheem and the moment they heard the model number, he said, "Take it back to Home Depot immediately and they will replace it for you". After further investigation I discovered a recent total recall was issued for more than 54,000 units sold exclusively at Home Depot from 2014 to 2016 all for the same problem. Almost 300 reports have been made and one involving more than $5500 in damage.

I bought new high end 50 gal electric water heater. After cost of installing, the top element was not working. It seems company does not make sure all is working before selling. They were good to send a new heater element but took a week with no hot water and difficulty in installing with specialized tool that no suppliers sell because they used a non conventional screw size.

We have had the same ac unit for the last 18 years. After such a long time a replacement is usually a better bargain than repairing. So we went ahead and bought this Ruud. I like how quiet it runs. It functions perfectly and does take much to run so the utility bill is low. This is what good manufacturing is all about.
