Ruud Heat Pump Troubleshooting
If you're looking for help fixing your Ruud Heat Pump, look no further! Our comprehensive Ruud Heat Pump Troubleshooting guide will explain common issues, provide tips, and show you how to read your model's error codes.
Troubleshooting a Ruud heat pump involves a systematic approach to identify and potentially resolve common issues. Here are some general steps you can take. Keep in mind that specific troubleshooting procedures may vary depending on the model and type of your heat pump. Always refer to your heat pump's user manual for model-specific instructions:
Check the Thermostat:
Ensure that the thermostat is set to the desired temperature.
Verify that the thermostat has power and is functioning correctly.
Inspect Air Filters:
A dirty or clogged air filter can reduce the heat pump's efficiency. Check and replace the air filter if it's dirty.
Verify Power Supply:
Check that the heat pump is receiving power. Ensure that the circuit breakers for the heat pump are not tripped.
Reset the Heat Pump:
Some Ruud heat pumps have a reset button. If you suspect a minor issue, try resetting the system by turning it off and back on.
Check for Error Codes:
If your heat pump has an LED display or control panel, check for error codes. Refer to your heat pump's manual for a list of error codes and their meanings.
Inspect the Outdoor Unit:
Ensure that the outdoor unit (condenser) is free from debris, leaves, and other obstructions that could affect airflow.
Inspect the Indoor Unit:
Check the indoor unit (air handler) for any visible issues. Look for water leaks, unusual sounds, or ice buildup on the coils.
Verify Refrigerant Levels:
Low refrigerant levels can affect the heat pump's efficiency. If you suspect a refrigerant issue, contact a professional technician to inspect and recharge the system.
Inspect the Thermostat Wiring:
Check for loose or disconnected thermostat wiring. Ensure that all connections are secure.
Check the Defrost System:
If your heat pump is not defrosting properly, it may lead to ice buildup. Inspect the defrost system and related components.
If you're unable to identify or resolve the issue with these steps, or if you are not comfortable with heat pump troubleshooting, it's recommended to contact a licensed HVAC professional. Heat pumps involve complex systems, and professional technicians have the expertise to diagnose and repair issues safely.
Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and consult your heat pump's user manual for specific information related to your model. If your heat pump is still under warranty, consider contacting Ruud or an authorized dealer for assistance.

We purchased our ruud HVAC systems three years ago, HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT BREAK DOWNS. As far as I am concerned these systems are a JUNK!!! Do not waste your money Last won was a leaking Acoil. One thousand dollars out of pocket to repair
Don’t buy a ruud heat pump i bought one in 2016. Warranty was 10 years (parts). It has cost me money every year, last year around 800 dollars this year they tell me it has a freon leak and to replace the part and freon will be around 1000 dollars. What next.
DO NOT buy a Ruud. Unreliable with error codes that even their factory and other trained techs can not resolve. Loud, constant malfunction, and other maladies too numerous to list. T971 applies most often.
I paid 5500 dollars for the ruud unit to be installed in 2016 , it has broke down every year since, service repair is out of site. Last year it broke down in Aug. (I live on the gulf coast, very hot) I was without air for 2 weeks. Coast around 800 to repair, this year during a cold spell it quit heating, repairman said coil was leaking and would cost around 900 to replace plus 200 for the service call. That is 1200 dollars, what next. If it breaks again I will have it taken out and sit it on my utility to. With a sign that says it is a pc. Of junk and pull it around everywhere.
DO NOT BUY A RUUD!!! I splurged and bought the higher end unit. less than 2 years old and already I have an expensive repair. I live in VA so it’s not even a harsh winter. And the air filters don’t fit at all. Had a Trane for 23 years and the only thing I ever had to do was replace a capacitor one time. SAVE YOUR MONEY… BUY A TRANE
