Should I buy a gas electric or solar pool heater
Posted On: October 25, 2021

Swimming pools are an excellent way to cool down when the weather gets hot. However, sometimes they can be a little too cold. That is why it's essential to purchase a heater so you can enjoy your time in the water without turning into an ice cube.

Depending on where you live, a pool heater can extend when you can use your pool, whether it's early in the spring or an extra month after the summer.

There are three types of pool heaters, gas, electric (heat pumps), and solar. So, how do you decide which one is best for your pool?

Here are the differences between the three heaters.

  1. Gas: These types of pool heaters use propane or natural gas to heat the water. By using gas, the heater can operate in any outside temperature condition, as long as there is fuel inside. Gas heaters work using heating coils connected to the pool pump, and the water running through coils warms quickly before returning to the pool. Although they are the more expensive type of heater, they work better when cold and dark outside.
  2. Electric: Believe it or not, electric pool heaters rely on the sun. Or at least the environment, as they pull the surrounding warm air to increase the temperature of the water. The air is drawn into the pump and then back into the pool. They are less expensive to run, but they need outside 55°F(12 °C) to work.
  3. Solar: While using the sun to generate energy is free, the cost to do so adds up. For solar heaters to work, you need an existing pool pump and solar panels. It also still requires electricity to operate and requires 50% up to 100% of the pool's surface to work. So if you're looking for an inexpensive way to heat your pool, solar may not be the way to go.

If you need help deciding which pool heater will work best for your pool, there are a few things to consider, such as where you live and your pool's type and size. It's also essential to purchase a pool cover as it will help keep the heat in and leaves and other debris out.
