Stiebel Eltron Appliance Repair

Stiebel Eltron was founded by Dr. Theodor Stiebel in 1924 to manufacture his revolutionary immersion water heaters. More than 90 years later, the company is still family owned and is a household name in Europe, known for the engineering and manufacturing excellence of our electric tankless water heaters, solar thermal equipment, heat pump water heaters, and the rest of our products.

Heat Pump Repair

When it comes to repairing a Stiebel Eltron heat pump, it's essential to prioritize safety and accuracy. Heat pump systems are complex, and repairs should be performed by qualified HVAC professionals. If you suspect your Stiebel Eltron heat pump requires repairs, here are steps you can take:

Contact Stiebel Eltron Customer Support:

If your Stiebel Eltron heat pump is still under warranty, contact Stiebel Eltron or the authorized dealer from whom you purchased the unit. They can provide guidance on warranty coverage and procedures.

Schedule Professional Service:

If you're experiencing issues that you cannot resolve through basic troubleshooting, it's advisable to schedule a service call with a licensed HVAC technician. They have the expertise to diagnose and repair complex HVAC systems.

Describe the Issue:

When scheduling a service call, provide a detailed description of the issue you're experiencing with your Stiebel Eltron heat pump. This information can help the technician prepare and troubleshoot more efficiently.

Prepare for the Technician's Visit:

Clear the area around the heat pump to allow the technician easy access for inspection and repairs. Remove any debris, leaves, or obstructions that may impact the unit's performance.

Be Observant:

Before the technician arrives, note any unusual sounds, smells, or behaviors exhibited by the heat pump. This information can be valuable for the technician's diagnostic process.

Discuss Maintenance:

While the technician is on-site, inquire about routine maintenance for your Stiebel Eltron heat pump. Regular maintenance can help prevent issues and prolong the lifespan of the system.

Common issues that may require professional attention include compressor malfunctions, refrigerant leaks, electrical component failures, and issues with the defrost system.

Remember that working on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems involves safety risks, and repairs should only be performed by licensed professionals. Additionally, if your heat pump is still covered by warranty, attempting unauthorized repairs or modifications may void that warranty.

If you're experiencing problems with your Stiebel Eltron heat pump, contact a qualified HVAC technician or Stiebel Eltron customer support for assistance. They can provide accurate diagnostics and perform any necessary repairs.

Water heater not heating
Some gas water heaters have a thermocouple. The thermocouple detects the pilot flame. If the thermocouple does not detect a flame, it will prevent the gas valve from opening. The gas valve opens to allow gas to enter the burner. If the gas valve does not open, the burner will not light, and the water heater will not heat. First, ensure that the ignition source is working properly. Second, ensure that the gas valve has pressure. If the ignition source is working, and the gas valve has pressure, consider replacing the gas valve and thermostat. The pilot ignites the water heater’s gas burner. If the pilot does not light, the water heater will not heat. Sometimes, carbon deposits can build up on the pilot and eventually create a restriction. If the pilot is restricted, try removing it and clearing it with a stiff brush and/or compressed air. If the pilot cannot be cleaned, replace it.

Water heater leaking
The temperature and pressure relief valve opens to stabilize temperature or pressure of the water heater if the temperature or pressure exceeds the proper level. The temperature and pressure relief valve opens at a set temperature. This temperature is indicated on the water heater. If the temperature and pressure relief valve leaks even though it has not reached the indicated relief temperature, replace it. The drain valve can be opened to drain the water heater for maintenance or to flush out mineral deposits from the tank. If the drain valve is leaking, drain the tank and replace the drain valve.

Water heater not lighting
Some water heaters use an igniter to ignite the gas. If the igniter fails, the burner will not light. To determine if the igniter is defective, first make sure the igniter is getting voltage. If the igniter is getting voltage, but it doesn’t glow, this indicates that the igniter is defective and should be replaced. The pressure switch closes when the proper airflow is achieved, signaling the control board to continue the ignition process. If the pressure switch is defective, the ignition process will stall, and the water heater will not light. The thermocouple detects the pilot flame. If the thermocouple does not detect a flame, the ignition process will stall, and the burner will not light.

Water heater too hot
The thermostat determines the maximum water temperature setting. If the thermostat is defective, the water temperature may not be set at the proper level. To determine if the thermostat is defective, assess hot water temperature from the nearest faucet. If the water temperature is hotter than the selected thermostat setting, this indicates that the thermostat is defective. If the thermostat is defective, replace the gas valve and thermostat assembly. We recommend a set temperature of 120 degrees or fewer to prevent the risk of scalding. If the heating element is shorted out, it will heat continuously, causing the water to get too hot. To determine if the heating element is shorted out, use a multimeter to test if the element is shorted to ground. If heating element is shorted out, replace it.

We had a Stiebel Eltron air source heat pump (ASHP) system installed around 4 years ago by an approved engineer as part of a passive house new build. The system has never worked properly. Particularly the DHW reheat is frought with issues. Either it doesn’t work at all or it heats the towel rails which prevents the hot water getting up to temperature. Diverter values have been replaced along with circuit boards but to no avail. Can’t comment on the technical support provided to the heating engineer as we do not have direct contact with Stiebel Eltron but we are the end customer and are very dissatisfied with the product. After this length of time we might have expected Stiebel themselves to come out to fix it or replace it.

Very good support from Alister, the service manager covering this part of Scotland. There was a problem with our ground source heat pump, dealt with under warranty. The part that appears to have been at fault has been quickly replaced and if it turns out to be a different part, he has a plan to sort it. He also gave lots of good advice on optimising the system. A good and confidence-inspiring experience all round.

I have been using electric demand for of over 10 years. When my last unit failed after seven years of use I switch brands to Stiebel. The Steibel is a very well made. The quality is much better than the previous brand that I owned. The entire path that the water takes is made from copper. Setting the temperature is very simple and very accurate. I use a heat exchanger to pre-heat the cold water supply so my supply temperature can vary by 30 degrees F. The Stiebel is able to keep a constant output temperature. I have only used this for a few days but after the experience, I have with other brands the Stiebel is clearly better. After using the Stiebel for a few weeks, I am still very happy with this purchase. Two more comments; The unit is very quiet, you can only hear the water run through the pipes. It's practically silent, and the flow sensor works with very low flow showers heads.

I just installed the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 29 Plus hot water heater and tested it at 110F degrees. It was able to run 2 showers and 3 faucets full blast with water pretty hot. I also tested the same at 115F and it was as hot as I'd want to touch. There was no reduction in flow. This little guy is great! Approximate Install Cost: 1. Unit: $700 - I bought this in Sept 2017. 2. Plumbing: $100 - I installed myself. Materials cost only. It took be about 5 hours. 3. Electrical: $300 - Electrician installed 3 x 40 Amp breakers (total draw of device is 120 Amps max) in my box (which had space). My total house service is 200 Amps. It took him about 3 hours. I know the electrician through a mutual connection, so he might have given me a deal.

I installed this unit on a Sunday in about 4 hours and I'm slow. I replacement a 55 gallon tank heater. Pulling wires took most of time because there are 3 of them and they are pretty fat. Mounting and hook up was straight forward. There are many installation videos on YouTube that are helpful. Don't even touch your electrical panel unless you have experience, electricity is an invisible assassin. Once fired up I set temp at 114 degrees. This is sufficient for my wife and daughter with their crazy hot showers. Didn't notice a difference in time it takes for water to get hot at spout. Several months use, still no complaints.

I recently installed solar on my home. I wanted to replace my 15 yo gas 50
I recently installed solar on my home. I wanted to replace my 15 yo gas 50 gallon tank water heater. The electric option seemed an economical choice. I chose the Stiebel Eltron Tempra Plus because of its capacity to modulate the power used and the flow of water to maintain a constant temperature. One thing to note: do not purchase or install a unit larger than 2/3 of your house service capacity. My home service amperage is 150. So the largest amperage unit that I can install is 100 amps. The 24 kw unit was the best choice for my home. Another thing to keep in mind, the 24 kw unit requires two independent 50 amp 2-pole breakers to connect service to it. For my home, I didn't have enough room to fit two 50 amp 2-pole breakers in my sub panel. Also for safety sake I wanted to have a 2 point disconnect to the Tempra Plus. I had a licensed electrician install a second 100 amp sub panel with the two 50 amp 2-pole breakers to provide service to the unit. I also had the city inspect the second sub panel and the water heater to record that it was installed to code. Its heating capacity fits my house perfectly. I have 3 showers and tubs in my home. If I run more than 2 at a time the hot water pressure drops significantly. However, we never run more than one at a time. A sink may be used at the same time as a shower. And there is no cold blast of water. The economy of this unit vs my old water heater: I spent an average of about $500 a year running my old water heater. My estimate of energy expense for this unit is $5 per year with solar. One more thing: if you want your tankless water heater to last more than a year or two then you'll need to flush it with vinegar about every 6 months. To be able to do this, you'll need to install service ports on intake and outlet ports. You can see examples of such service ports in my photos. I see photos of other installs, all without service ports. And then complaints that it suddenly stopped working after a year. Well tankless water heaters are not maintenance free. If you want to keep it working you have to descale it every 6 to 12 months depending on your water hardness. Or you have to have a water softener installed to get the calcium out of your water. Don't forget the service ports!

This water heater is installed in a residence in the St Louis region. It supplies 2 full bathrooms, laundry, and kitchen. With a claw foot tub and a soaker tub, I have yet to hear any complaints of running out of hot water. It is very convenient to be able to set a precise temperature. I wish there was a way to hook up a remote. It was not able to maintain temperature while running two showers with temperatures outside below freezing. Will try again in the spring to see if the outside temp makes a difference. I installed it myself in about 4 hours. It is relatively easy to install if you are familiar with running water lines and electric. I would NOT recommend that you install this yourself unless you are very familiar with electric. Update 04/25/17- With air temperatures in the 60's, I have been able to run two showers at once with adequate supply/heat. The second shower does receive a reduced pressure, however that is how the product is designed and is expected.
