Why is My Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?
Posted On: December 6, 2022

When you're battling the summer heat, you need a high quality air conditioner to keep your home cool and comfortable! But what happens when your air conditioner stops cooling your home down and starts blowing hot air instead? Read on to learn more about what can cause air conditioners to blow warm air and how you can resolve this issue.

Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Blowing Warm Air and How to Fix It
There could be a few different reasons that your air conditioner is blowing warm air instead of dispersing the cool air that you've been craving. Resolving a few of these issues will require the assistance of a certified HVAC professional, but you may be able to fix one or two of these problems on your own!

Your Thermostat Is Set Incorrectly
We know, it might sound silly, but it would be even sillier to pay an air conditioner repair technician to come to your home just to change your thermostat settings!

The first thing you want to check is that your thermostat isn't set to "heat." You could have bumped the switch accidentally with your purse or briefcase, one of your children could have played around with it, or any other number of accidents could have caused this to happen. But believe us, it happens! Make sure your thermostat is set to "cool" if you want your air conditioner to blow cool air.

The second thing to check is that your thermostat's fan settings aren't set to "on." While that might sound like what you want on a hot day, it's actually not! If your fan is set to "on," it will blow air through your vents whether your system is actively cooling your home or not, meaning it will blow out warm air when your air conditioner is taking a break. You want your thermostat's fan settings to be switched to "auto" for it to only blow out cool air.

If your thermostat is already set to "cool" and its fan is set to "auto," then you may be experiencing one of the following issues.

Your Outdoor Unit Lost Power
Your air conditioning system is made up of an indoor unit (which blows air through your home) and an outdoor unit (which cools the air down). So, if your indoor unit is blowing warm air throughout your house, it could be because the outdoor unit doesn't have power and can't cool the air down.

Typically, if this is the case, either your circuit breaker tripped or you've blown a fuse. If you check your circuit breaker or fuse panel and you see that the circuit isn't providing power to your outdoor unit, you've found the problem! Unfortunately, this issue will need to be resolved as a professional.

You're Low on Refrigerant
If your air conditioner is blowing out warm air, your unit's refrigerant levels might be low. This usually indicates a refrigerant leak in your system! If that's the case, your air conditioner will continue to run and blow out warm air, trying to reach the temperature you set on your thermostat.

Your best bet will be to contact a professional to come in and figure out where the refrigerant leak is in your system so we can repair it and get your system up and running again. We'll fix the leak, restore your refrigerant levels, and leave you 100% satisfied with the solution, guaranteed!

Your Evaporator Coils Are Dirty
Your evaporator coils are a crucial component of your air conditioner's functionality, and it's hugely important to keep them clean so they can work to keep your unit running properly to cool your home. So, if you forgot to schedule your annual air conditioner tune-up, there's a chance that your evaporator coil is coated in dirt or debris, which can inhibit it from blowing cool air.

To resolve this issue, all you have to do is schedule air conditioner maintenance to get your system tuned up, cleaned up, and ready to cool down your home.
