Why is my furnace blowing cold air

Why is my furnace blowing cold air
Posted On: October 25, 2021

It's a scenario no homeowner wants to go through. They turn on their furnace during the colder months expecting warm air but instead, it starts blowing cold air.

There are a few reasons why this is happening. It's important to note that most furnace issues require a technician to repair. But before you call one, here are some common problems that can occur with a furnace.

  1. Pilot light: One of the most common issues with furnaces, especially older ones, is the pilot light going out. Pilot lights are small flames that help heat up the furnace. If it goes out, you can relight it to see if that is the issue.
  2. Gas supply: A reason your pilot light could go out is an issue with the gas supply line. Check to make sure the gas is on. If there is an issue with the gas supply, call your gas company immediately.
  3. Thermostat: Another common issue with the furnace is the thermostat. The thermostat controls your furnace and the temperature. Check to ensure it's set for heat and that the fan is set to on or auto. When it's set to on, the fan will continuously run. The auto setting means that the heat will only come on when the thermostat detects a drop in temperature.
  4. Condensate Clog: Newer furnaces have a condensate drain that removes water during the heat stage. If this becomes clogged, the burners will not light.
  5. Clogged filters: Filters prevent dirt, debris, and pet hair from entering the furnace. Often homeowners forget to replace them, which will cause the furnace to work harder and restrict airflow. Eventually, it will shut off to prevent the furnace from catching fire. You should change your furnace every 90 days or less depending on how often it runs and if you have pets.
  6. Blocked vent pipe: High-efficiency furnaces have vent pipes that go from your furnace to the outside of your home. If these pipes get clogged, your furnace will shut down.
  7. Ductwork: Leaking ducts will cause cold air to travel from the basement or attic to pass through the furnace.

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure that your furnace is in working order, especially if your furnace is a little older. A well-maintained furnace can last from 15-20 years.
