Air Conditioner Repair

Is it getting power? 
Check your fuses or circuit breakers to make sure they don't need to be present. 
Remember, if your home's power is out or disconnected, your system may not work. 

Is the thermostat set correctly? 
Make sure your thermostat has power 
Check that your thermostat is set to cooling or heating mode and not set to "off". 
Make sure the thermostat is set to the right setting and temperature. 

No cooling / Insufficient cooling 
Check the doors and windows in your home. Close any open doors or windows as cool air may be escaping through them. 
Check to see if your thermostat is on, and what temperature it's set at. If your thermostat is turned off or set incorrectly, turn it on and/or reset thermostat. 
Check your home's circuits and fuse box. If you have an open circuit breaker or burned-out fuse, switch on the circuit or replace the fuse. 

No airflow 
Check around your outdoor unit. If there are any leaves, hedges or property walls butting up against it, your system may have frozen up due to a dirty coil. Make sure your outdoor unit has 1' of clearance all around it. 
Check the filters in each of your system components (where applicable). If any of your filters are dirty, consult your manual to clean or replace it. Or call your dealer to do this for you. 
Check to see if there is any air coming through your vent. Your indoor blower may not be operating. If this is the case, you should contact your dealer. 

Stale and stuffy air 
If you have a whole-home air cleaner or air exchanger, make sure it is switched on and its filter is clean. 

Too dry or too much moisture in the air 
Check to make sure your humidifier is switched on. Many times, homeowners turn off the humidifier at the end of the previous heating season and forget to turn it back on when needed. 
Make sure your humidifier’s damper or water valve is open.  
Check your humidifier setting and adjust the indoor relative humidity settings to bring greater comfort to your home. 

Noisy air vents 
A high pitched sound often, although not always, indicates a lack of return air. Make sure your return and supply vents are open and free of any blockages including furniture. 
Other noises (e.g., rattling, humming, thumping or scraping sounds) could be a sign of undersized or flimsy duct work, clogged filter or wear and tear on your system’s internal components. 

Furnace Repair

Check the thermostat 
Anytime you have furnace problems, your first step should be to check the thermostat. Make sure that the thermostat temperature is set higher than room temperature and also that the heat is turned on. You’d be surprised how many calls we’ve had where the problem was the heat was turned off! Turn the fan switch to the on position and if the fan doesn’t turn on, it’s possible the furnace isn’t getting power or the motor is broken. 

Is the gas turned off? 
Your utility company cannot turn off your heat during the cold winter months, but sometimes the gas may be turned off for other reasons. Call your gas company to check if construction work in your area could be the cause of the furnace not working. If so, the gas company will be able to let you know when it will be back on or when they can repair the issue. 

Check the power 
Start by checking the breaker in your electrical panel. If the breaker was tripped, check for loose connections before turning it back on. Make sure that the furnace switch is turned on. The switch is usually located in the basement, near the furnace or the basement stairs. 

Check the plug 
Check to see if your furnace unit is unplugged. If recent work has been done in the area around your furnace, it’s possible workers may have unplugged your unit to use the outlet. Sure it sounds stupid, but it does happen. 

Check the filter 
A dirty filter can cause your furnace to stop working. Change your filter and wait 30 minutes before hitting the reset button. If the unit still doesn’t start, try the reset button once and wait 30 more minutes. Ensure that your furnace door is on properly after changing the filter as this may prevent the furnace from starting. 

Toggle the power 
Turn the power for your American Standard Furnace on and off twice in 30 seconds. This will reset any lockout issues on your furnace. 

Check the blower door 
Open and close the blower door. If this door is not secure or is missing, the unit may not run appropriately. 

Check the pilot light 
If your furnace has a standing pilot light, make sure that it’s lit. You should be able to see it when you open the combustion chamber door. If it’s out, follow the furnace lighting instructions and re-light. 

Check your manual 
Locate your American Standard furnace manual and check for troubleshooting tips unique to your model of furnace. 

Check for vent blockage 
If you’ve checked all of the above, see if any debris – snow, ice, weeds or grass – are blocking your furnace venting.

Heat Pump Repair

I'm sorry to hear that your heat pump is broken. If your heat pump is not functioning properly, it's recommended to follow these steps:

Check the Basics:

• Ensure that the heat pump is receiving power. Check the circuit breaker and ensure it is not tripped.
• Verify that the thermostat is set to the appropriate temperature and mode (heating or cooling).
• Make sure the fan settings on the thermostat are correctly set (Auto or On).

Troubleshooting:

• If the heat pump is not turning on at all, it could be a problem with the power supply, thermostat, or control board. You may need to call a professional HVAC technician to diagnose and repair the issue.
• If the heat pump is running but not providing the expected heating or cooling, it could be due to refrigerant issues, a faulty compressor, a malfunctioning sensor, or other technical problems. Again, contacting a professional technician is advisable.

Water Heater Repair

Water heater not heating 
Some gas water heaters have a thermocouple. The thermocouple detects the pilot flame. If the thermocouple does not detect a flame, it will prevent the gas valve from opening. 

Water heater leaking 
The temperature and pressure relief valve opens to stabilize temperature or pressure of the water heater if the temperature or pressure exceeds the proper level. The temperature and pressure relief valve opens at a set temperature. This temperature is indicated on the water heater. If the temperature and pressure relief valve leaks even though it has not reached the indicated relief temperature, replace it. 

Water heater not lighting 
Some water heaters use an igniter to ignite the gas. If the igniter fails, the burner will not light. To determine if the igniter is defective, first make sure the igniter is getting voltage. If the igniter is getting voltage, but it doesn’t glow, this indicates that the igniter is defective and should be replaced. 

Water heater too hot 
The thermostat determines the maximum water temperature setting. If the thermostat is defective, the water temperature may not be set at the proper level. To determine if the thermostat is defective, assess hot water temperature from the nearest faucet. If the water temperature is hotter than the selected thermostat setting, this indicates that the thermostat is defective. If the thermostat is defective, replace the gas valve and thermostat assembly. We recommend a set temperature of 120 degrees or fewer to prevent the risk of scalding.
