Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

The Air Conditioner Won’t Turn On
In addition to checking for problems in your household fuse box, make sure to check the settings at your thermostat. You may simply have forgotten to set a temperature level that will cause your A/C to kick in at the expected time. Also, in some situations, a power surge or a tripped breaker may cause your American Standard air conditioner to turn itself off. You can troubleshoot this issue by checking the relevant switches on the indoor and outdoor units.

The Air Conditioner Won’t Cool Properly
In some circumstances, your American Standard air conditioner may turn on, but fail to provide adequate cooling for your home. Two easily solvable air conditioning problems may be responsible for this issue. First, check your thermostat settings and make sure that you have them set low enough to turn the system on at the appropriate time. Also, look for any open windows you might not have noticed previously. If undetected, even one such window can seriously decrease your system’s cooling power.
The underlying cause of air conditioning problems like improper cooling may also be a malfunction in an A/C component called a compressor, which normally moves refrigerant through the system.

Lack of Adequate Airflow
A malfunctioning A/C system may fail to circulate enough cool air throughout your home. One of the key causes of this problem is a dirty filter somewhere in the system. To troubleshoot this issue, check all relevant locations and replace any filter with obvious signs of dirt/dust accumulation.
Lack of adequate air conditioner airflow may also be the result of a dirty condenser coil. Problems in this area often arise when something obstructs the passage of air into your outdoor A/C unit (common candidates include leaves, debris and nearby hedges.) In turn, the obstructed flow of outdoor air can literally cause the system to freeze up. Look for telltale signs of water on the ground beneath the unit. If you notice any water spots, clear away all obstructions and turn the system off for a few hours. This should give the unit time to thaw out.

Indoor Air Conditioner Leaks
All air conditioners generate significant amounts of condensation during normal operation. Depending on where you live, the water produced by this process can total as much as several gallons a day. This large amount of water must have somewhere to go. Usually, it’s drained from your air handler through an attached tube or a section of PVC pipe. From there, it’s forced outside by gravity or a component called a condensate pump.
If you notice water pools or active leaks below the indoor unit of your air conditioning system, you have several potential troubleshooting options. First, look for cracks or leaks in the tube or pipe responsible for channeling condensation out of the unit. Next, look for any signs of obstruction within the tube/pipe. If ice is blocking the line, you can follow up by checking for dirty air filters and a lack of adequate refrigerant.

Strange Vent Noises
Strange or unusual noises coming from your air conditioning/heating vents have a number of possible causes. Most of the time, what seems like air conditioning problems is nothing more than furniture obstructing the system’s return or supply vent openings. However, the humming, thumping or rattling sounds you hear may also indicate the presence of a clogged air filter. Unfortunately, if your troubleshooting steps eliminate these potential candidates, you may have bigger problems, including worn-out A/C system components or poorly installed or inadequately sized air ducts.

Furnace Troubleshooting

Not heating?
Most likely, either the electrical system providing your furnace’s power has shorted or the power switch has blown. Try resetting your furnace’s circuit breaker. If it has blown, you will need to replace it.
The furnace’s igniter might either be cracked or faulty. Check the part for cracks, if it is then replace the igniter. If it isn’t cracked, use a multimeter to test for continuity.

Cycling irregularly?
Your thermostat might be adjusting incorrectly, causing the furnace to cycle on and off too often. If your thermostat has an adjustable calibration scale, adjust the heat anticipator. If this does not stabilize the unit, you may have to replace the thermostat.

Not blowing hot air?
Your blower motor may have completely burnt out. If this doesn’t seem to be the case, then the connecting belt may have simply broken. Test to see if power is reaching the motor. If it does, but isn’t running, the motor has likely failed. If the motor runs but air doesn’t move, the connecting belt has probably broken. You’ll have to replace the belt.

Blowing too much air?
The control board regulates the amount of voltage that reaches each functioning part. If the relay that controls the blower motor has failed, it will continually send voltage to the motor. Replace the control board.
The contact that controls the blower motor on your thermostat may be stuck closed, causing the blower motor to run continuously. Use a multimeter to check for continuity. If it appears the thermostat is the issue, replace it.

Leaking water?
Check the drain pipe.

Starting and then stopping shortly after?
Your furnace’s flame sensor monitors the burner, detecting whether a flame is present. If it is either defective or dirty, it will not be able to detect a flame. If dirty, clean the sensor using a fine abrasive pad. If faulty, replace the flame sensor.

Heat Pump Troubleshooting

Here is a general troubleshooting guide for American Standard heat pumps. Keep in mind that specific troubleshooting steps may vary depending on the model and series of your heat pump. Always refer to the user manual or contact American Standard customer support for detailed instructions and assistance.

Check Power and Settings:

  • Ensure that the heat pump is receiving power by checking the circuit breaker and the on/off switch.
  • Make sure the thermostat is set to the appropriate temperature and mode (heating or cooling).
  • Verify that the fan settings on the thermostat are correctly set (Auto or On).

Inspect Air Filters:

  • Check and clean or replace the air filters if they are dirty or clogged. Restricted airflow can affect the heat pump's performance.

Check Thermostat Settings:

  • Confirm that the thermostat is set to the desired temperature and mode.
  • Ensure the fan is set to Auto or On, depending on your preference.

Examine Outdoor Unit:

  • Check if the outdoor unit is free of debris, such as leaves, dirt, or obstructions. Clear away any debris that could block airflow.
  • Verify that the outdoor unit's fan is operating properly. If it's not spinning, there may be an issue with the fan motor or control board.

Check Air Vents and Registers:

  • Ensure that the supply and return air vents and registers are not blocked or obstructed. Proper airflow is essential for efficient heat pump operation.

Verify Refrigerant Levels:

  • Low refrigerant levels can affect the heat pump's performance. If you suspect a refrigerant issue, contact a professional HVAC technician to inspect and recharge the system if necessary.

Inspect Wiring and Connections:

  • Check for any loose or damaged wiring connections in the thermostat, indoor unit, and outdoor unit. Tighten or repair connections as needed.

Restart the Heat Pump:

  • Turn off the heat pump for a few minutes and then turn it back on. This can sometimes reset the system and resolve minor issues.

Contact a Professional:

  • If you have performed the basic troubleshooting steps but the issue persists, it's recommended to contact a qualified HVAC technician. They can diagnose and resolve more complex problems and perform any necessary repairs.

Remember, this is a general troubleshooting guide, and specific instructions may vary based on your American Standard heat pump model. Always consult the user manual or reach out to American Standard customer support or a professional HVAC technician for accurate troubleshooting instructions.

We replaced our old air handler a few months ago, when replacing the heat pump. It works well, although it’s much louder than the unit it replaced. But it has had zero issues, and the house was comfortable last summer, with 90+ degree days, and with now freezing weather outside. Happy with our purchase.

I was and am still using my 4 gal under sink Bosh unit but 4 gal wasn't enough. Put this 12 gal baby right behind sink in another room and piped it all through both water heaters and now have 16 gal instant hot water. Would highly recommend this water heater. Just hope it lasts.

The water heater does what it is supposed to do. I had never installed a water heater before but it was relatively easy for what most pay people to do. The ignition electrodes had fallen off in shipping so it was frustrating to find it didn't work for a few minutes. I eventually got it all sorted. My only gripe with the unit itself is that the water fluctuates temperature when it powers down while still providing hot water. I will probably figure it out, but the water heater does it's job otherwise. I have tested it with two showers, dishwasher and clothes washer going at the same time. I chose this model for the price mostly, so it's what I expected. If I had the choice, I would never go back to a tank again but I would get a better water heater so the temperature stays within a few degrees.

I had my old American Standard furnace replaced a few months ago with a newer model of the same brand. It was still working fine, and the only reason I had it replaced was because I knew that it was quite old. I found the serial number after it was removed and did a search, only to realize that it was more than thirty years old. Quite phenomenal! I hope that the newer model functions as well.

We’ve only had our new system installed for 4 months but it’s been great! We purchased our new home without getting an inspection first and had to quickly get a new HVAC system installed and this was highly recommended by our tech. When we did get around to getting a home inspection our inspector even commented on the high quality of American Standard products so hopefully they hold up as expected!

About four years ago, I had a 91 % American Standard furnace installed in my newly constructed home. As of today, I had never had it serviced yet it works as well as it did when I first purchased it. These furnaces are also quite popular in my neighborhood. As yet, I haven’t heard anyone complaining. I can’t express the joy of having a quiet, dependable and efficient furnace enough.

I love this water heater. I installed it myself. I have experience in plumbing, so I decided to save money by installing it myself. The install was what I expected since I have installed these before. This water heater is very quite, so I was surprised to hear about all of the people saying it is too loud. It is very quiet. You can barely hear it if you are next to it. In fact, I thought there was something wrong with it since it was so quiet. I highly recommend this water heater, you will save money and space.

So far so good. Semi difficult install as some of the fittings required adapters to work with a standard water heater setup. Nothing several trips to the hardware store couldn't solve. Unit did not fire up the first time after install. Error 11 came on even though the unit had gas water and power. Opened the unit up and found that the AC converter had fallen lose and disconnected. Also a pipe was loose. Once these were fixed it fired right up.

Great heat pump in terms of efficiency. Costs essentially nothing to run on
Great heat pump in terms of efficiency. Costs essentially nothing to run on AC mode. Heatings costs are much lower than prior heat pump. This would absolutely be a 5 star review except for one thing. Every time the outside temperature goes below 5 degrees, the compressor shuts off permanently. The only way to get the compressor to run again is to power cycle the entire unit. Even if the outside temperature hits 50 degrees, the compressor will not cycle on. This has now happened 5 years in a row. Reported to dealer, who could find no solution. This one issue means that one month every year my bill goes up by over $200 for the month in which this happens (to about $500 from a normal winter high of $300). Obviously this is a controls problem that American Standard has no interest in addressing, which is too bad as it otherwise a nearly perfect unit.

I have a small towel closet behind the shower and chose this water heater because it would just fit in the small space. Was concerned it may be too small. Replaced the shower head with a Delta saver model and with the saver head I can take a comfortable shower and there is still plenty of hot water when I'm done. The project ended up being a huge improvement over the old water heater that was installed about as far away from the center of the house and the shower as it could have been. It has been so nice to have instant hot water for the shower instead of waiting and waiting for hot water with the old setup. The unit was well made and installed with no problems. The unit was designed to be used as a point of use but I removed the old water heater and installed a cloths dryer in it's place. The little water heater is providing hot water to the kitchen, main bath and washer. As long as it gets time to recover it has been able to do it all. Wish I had installed it years ago

Our heat pump was installed in early in 2022 and has proven to be dependable and quiet. It's greatest gift has been the air conditioning that makes our home livable during those "dog days of summer." Our savings have ranged from 25% less to 38% less over 2021. Our only regret is that we did not have it installed sooner.

American Standard makes good HVAC equipment so as long as it is installed properly by a competent HVAC contractor. If so, you shouldn’t have too much to worry about. It is also good to have regular maintenance performed on any type of HVAC equipment as things tend to wear out overtime. American Standard and Trane share the same type of engineering that goes into their equipment.

I had a York for a heat pump 42yrs it started to nickel and dime us the last 2yrs Bought a 14 seer A.Std so far, I own this for 5months, and it's already broke down. And Boss services told me it would be at least 2 weeks to get the parts (that's unacceptable and also told us when we bought this unit it would save us on our electricity bill) not true in fact our bill has double since they installed unit. and the day they did the install they had to get not 1, not2, but 3 a/c coils because they wouldn't hold a charge, it was a disaster from the get go. NOT A HAPPY CAMPER NOR WOULD I RECOMEND THEM $10K DOWN THE DRAIN, had to call the factory to get any help. That's Boss Services of Benton Harbor, Michigan it seems this is how they treat somebody that had a stroke and doesn't work, SHAMEFUL, ABSOLULTELY SHAMEFUL it's the dead of winter and it seems they don't care just the opposite of their commercials. Buyer Beware-should have bought a YORK instead.

I had the six ultras 95 installed in my home two years ago by a certified installer. It has been running amazingly since then. I have devoted myself to yearly servicing and maintenance. I also change the filters according to usage. I use a Nest thermostat to warn me when to change filters based on usage. I also constantly check the water lines for leaks. My advice to any owner of this product is to take maximum care.
