Carrier Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

CHECK THE THERMOSTAT SETTINGS 
Knowing how to troubleshoot an air conditioner often starts with the main control – its thermostat. Thermostats come in a variety of options, starting with very basic models that simply control heating and cooling temperatures and fan operation. More sophisticated programmable versions can be set to automatically change temperatures throughout the day for better comfort when you are home, and higher efficiency when you are at work or asleep at night. Wi-Fi models can be controlled from a mobile device or computer anywhere you have access to the internet. Considering all of the options available, there are a number of ways your thermostat settings can make it appear that your air conditioner is not running correctly. 
Symptoms you might notice include: 
- Lukewarm air blowing from the registers/vents at times, and cold air blowing at other times 
- Higher than expected temperature reading on the thermostat 
- No air blowing from the registers/vents 

AIR FILTER IS DIRTY 
The next most common step in AC troubleshooting is checking for a dirty air filter. Your AC system is more than just the outdoor unit sitting by the side of your home. Most systems also include an indoor air handler unit, usually a furnace or fan coil. The indoor unit should include an air filter that traps dust, dirt and other airborne particles. Whether you have a basic, 1-inch furnace filter or a more sophisticated electronic air cleaner or purifier, maintenance is the key to effective indoor air filtration and proper cooling system operation. Lack of maintenance can lead to a clogged filter and blocked air flow. These can lead to loss of efficiency, discomfort, or in more extreme cases, system failure. 
Symptoms of a dirty filter include: 
- The air temperature in your home is warmer than normal 
- Airflow from your cooling registers seems to be less than usual 
- The AC runs for short periods of time before shutting down and re-starting (short cycling) 

REFRIGERANT LEVEL IS LOW 
Your air conditioning system uses a chemical called refrigerant to help cool your home. The refrigerant is pumped through copper tubing, the indoor evaporator coil and outdoor condensing unit, in a continuous loop. As it flows through your AC system, the refrigerant pulls heat from your home and deposits it outside, leaving indoor air cooler, less humid and more comfortable. 
If refrigerant levels get low, you might experience the following air conditioner problems: 
- House not staying cool enough 
- System running continuously or for longer than normal cycles 
- AC turning on, then off quickly, several times in a row (short cycling) 

ELECTRICAL PANEL ISSUES 
If there is no air coming from the registers, the house is too warm, and the system isn’t running at all, you might have lost power to the system. Your air conditioner runs on electricity, so if it won’t power on, locate your home’s electrical panel (breaker box). Look for a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker that isn’t in the ON position. Keep in mind that your air conditioner outdoor unit will be connected to a dedicated 220 or 240 volt disconnect or circuit breaker located near the air conditioner unit. The air conditioner also is connected to a circuit breaker or fuse at the electrical panel (breaker box). Remember that electricity can be dangerous – even deadly. If it is a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker, make sure you are comfortable and competent to safely replace the fuse and/or reset the breaker – if not, consult a qualified professional. Do not attempt to troubleshoot electrical issues yourself. If the circuit breaker trips again (or the fuse blows again) it’s time to call a technician who knows how to troubleshoot an air conditioner with electrical issues. 

EVAPORATOR COIL IS FROZEN 
With a typical split-system central air conditioner, the evaporator coil is often located inside the home or garage, as a part of the air handler unit. If the indoor unit is a furnace, the evaporator coil is typically mounted where the outgoing air flows. If it’s a fan coil, the evaporator coil is typically located inside the fan coil cabinet. 
You may have a frozen evaporator coil if you notice: 
- Higher utility bills 
- Inadequate cooling 
- Excessive condensate drainage near your indoor unit 
- Frost or ice forming on the copper refrigerant lines coming from your evaporator coil cabinet 
- Frost forming on exterior refrigerant tubing or the outdoor unit 
Issues that can lead to a frozen evaporator coil include: 
- Excessive buildup of dust, dirt or other pollutants on the evaporator coil 
- Excessively dirty or clogged air filter 
- Excessive buildup of dust, dirt or debris on the outdoor condensing unit 
- Low refrigerant levels 

CONDENSING UNIT IS FAULTY OR BROKEN 
With a typical split-system central air conditioner, the condensing unit sits outside your home and includes the outdoor coil, the compressor, the condenser fan and its electronic controls. It’s time to troubleshoot an air conditioner for a faulty or broken condensing unit when you notice issues like: 
- No cooling or inadequate cooling 
- System turning on and off rapidly (short cycling) 
- System running continuously or for unusually long periods of time 
- Frost or ice on the coil or copper refrigerant tubing 
- Condensing unit not turning on at all

We purchased a Carrier air conditioner and furnace through a dealer called Weather King 8 years ago. We thought Carrier was a quality company. The unit seemed to function well for a while. We live in Ohio and only use the air about 6-8 times a year, so we were surprised when the unit kept running and not cooling last fall. We contacted the dealer and paid $79 for a service call. We were told there was a loss of Freon and to schedule a visit in the spring. We did so, and were charged almost $500 more with no repair. We were told the coil was bad and told to contact Carrier.The Carrier rep was very curt and refused to help. She said that even though we registered the unit, the warranty was good for only 5 years. We have since learned from professionals that the defective Carrier coils are an industry wide problem and that a class action suit may be filed soon. We feel Carrier is deceptive in their practices and would advise readers to STOP BUYING CARRIER.

The Carrier unit upstairs has a leaking coil inside. Estimate $1500 to replace. 6 years for a coil to go bad is terrible. I have read that Canada has a countrywide class action against Carrier for this very reason. Why not in the U.S.?

Very dissatisfied with the quality of our Carrier 4 ton air conditioner (model 24ABB348A003). The compressor failed after only 3 years and it was not a blow out failure. The technician said it is internal failures most likely due to the quality of the compressor. The warranty of course only cover the park itself, not even the coolant they have to refill after reinstall the compressor. The diagnosis and the replace of the compressor cost about the 1/4 of the original cost and install of the air conditioner. It is ridiculous to have to spend so much on labor to fix a major component on an problem most likely due to the quality of their product.When speaking to a carrier representative, they do not stand by their product, only referring to the letter of the warranty agreement. Parts also does not include coolant cost. The excuse is that they do not know what exactly cause the compressor failure and they do not look at every compressor that failed, even those that failed in much less typical lifetime of the product. It is very good to know that Carrier does not take quality of their product seriously enough to diagnose major component that prematurely failed. Either that or they have so much failure on their compressor that they just dont care. Either conclusion does not speak well of Carrier as a company.

Carrier Comfort Series unit - Puron. We are extremely dissatisfied customers. $4,500 was spent on a brand new, energy efficient air conditioner. We were told from the sales man that this was the top of the line product and will save time and money. We had this new unit installed on Aug. 11, 2014 and when we went downstairs to check it on Sept. 6, 2014 because it wasnt dropping the temperature in the home sufficiently, we saw that there was water all surrounding the unit. In +30 degree weather we called the company to say we wanted it fixed and they couldnt send out a worker for a few days. When a worker came out he worked for 2 hours that night and 4 hours the next day, he spent this time cleaning up the mess that was left by the installers. He told us when he had done all that he was able to that the unit was defective and the company was aware of 20 other units that were defective this summer of the same model. Apparently the evaporator coil was faulty on it. Waiting for the sales man to call back. So far no call. Not happy.

The only problem Ive had was replacing fan motor about 6 years ago. The old unit still runs and cools and am quite pleased with its reliability. I am now at a point to see how long it will last. Have read some bad reviews of modern carriers and wanting to see if other homeowners have had same great service with newer models and would recommend a carrier again. Thanks.

The installer (ARS in Florida) refused to help, saying the unit must be maintenanced twice a year to stay under warranty for labor (brand new!). Carrier declined to comment about their unit failing after 1 year, or consider replacing the unit. The parts were under warranty, but the labor would cost almost $1000.00. Carrier said they would send a representative out to the installer company to review the issue, but after a month of me trying to find out the status of the issue, they finally just told me that there was nothing they would do. I would not recommend this company for air conditioners. High priced products with lousy quality.

Got Carrier Infinity Greenspeed in November 2012. Got the 97.2% efficiency infinity modulating natural gas furnace and 4 ton 17 SEER air conditioning unit. I do love the low speed variable heating as it keeps a gentle constant heat. Cooling is also good and efficient. Both units, however, have been unreliable. In October 2014 the furnace broke. We needed a new inducer motor. They dont keep parts at Carrier, so it took several days to get the part. Cost me $400 for labor and other parts. In July 2015 air conditioning unit leaked and had to have coolant replaced. In May 2016, the unit would not start during routine twice a year maintenance service agreement we had with installer. There were multiple leaks and the entire outside unit and coil had to be replaced. The installer was great and didnt charge for labor since we had repeated problems with the unit. Carrier again did not have parts on hand, so had to wait a week on parts. Still cost me $600 in additional installer parts not covered by Carrier. So, on this supposed high end system, both the furnace and air conditioner have had major failures in under 3 years of use and these have cost me over $1000 out of pocket. Obviously, my conclusion is that Carrier Infinity Greenspeed is a piece of junk.

I built a new home in 2007/2008. I researched and purchased what I was lead to believe was some of finest equipment in HVAC on the market. Boy was I mislead. It was much more pricey than the standard system I was originally quoted but since I was building the home myself for retirement, I wanted the best. The heat pump I purchased was a Bryant Evolution, two stage, variable speed, model # 286-ANA-048000-CBAA, serial # 2907E28649, a 4 ton/16 seer system. Sounds cool but what a piece of junk. The system was roughed in late October 2007 with final installation/operation in late August 2008 when I finished the home.First indication of a problem was a compressor failure the end of March 2009. I was told it was a fluke and the compressor was replaced under warranty. My HVAC system does not experience heavy use or extremes as far as heat and cold because I live in western Washington State where the climate is fairly moderate. In the winter, I burn a lot of wood and the summer we rarely use the A/C. That said, it should be fair to expect even a longer life from this higher end equipment. Not So! In January 2015, I experienced another compressor failure and this is where my true frustration begins.My dealer confirmed that it was in fact another compressor failure and said this had been a much greater problem than Carrier had wished to admit. It was apparently enough of a problem that Carrier was offering a pro-rated replacement program. So my options are: (1) replace the compressor again and take my chances, (2) buy a new replacement Carrier heat pump at a discounted price (approx: $2,000.00) and hope to get a better unit. I have absolutely no problem with the pro-rated idea since I did get some years of service from the original system. The problem is, even though I am technically paying for a new unit, Carrier does not even have enough faith in their own equipment to give me a new warranty. Even if I opt to buy the new replacement unit, they will only recognize the remainder of my original warranty. Is this ridiculous or what? If they were simply replacing my unit at no cost to me, because the original unit was crap, then I would have no beef at all with this ridiculous policy. But in essence, I am paying for the new unit both with more cash and the expectation that the original higher end system that I paid a premium price for would last far longer than it did. The last standard grade heat pump I had on my previous home lasted 18 years. So, whats wrong with this picture. When my dealer gave me these options and explained this warranty, I didnt believe it. So I called Carrier customer service. After talking with a representative and then a senior representative named Diane, I was told the dealer was correct and that was all Carrier was willing to do for me. I explained to Diane that this system had failed previously in 2009 but this made no difference. This was all Carrier was willing to offer even with their higher end systems. Very sad that even they dont have enough confidence in their equipment to give a person a new warranty on new equipment. Needless to say I will no longer be using or recommend Carrier equipment to anyone, EVER. This policy and the way they stand by their products and treat their customers is simply horrible. DONT BUY CARRIER !!!!! So now I will be paying another $5,000.00 to buy a Trane and my big investment just 7 years ago is gone.One last note about some of their higher end products. My neighbor and long-time friend built a home next to me a few months after I built mine. Never guess what my recommendation was to him on HVAC for his house. Yep you got it, same junk. While he did not experience a compressor failure early on like I did, he did experience other smaller issues. However, his system failed (compressor) in the spring of 2014. His system was approximately 1 year newer than mine so his pro-rated cost to replace in April 2014 was approx: $1,500.00 instead of the $2,000.00 I was asked to pay. Ok, so good for him. He got a new replacement system (for a 5-6 year old system) for $1,500.00, AND a NEW Warranty that started from the day his new system arrived. So I would say this was good business on Carriers part by essentially continuing his HVAC experience for a pro-rated amount and giving him a new warranty on a new product. Something must have happened between April 2014 and the end of the year (probably more failures), because as I said earlier, Carrier no longer has the faith in their equipment to give a new warranty on new products. In case I forgot to say this, DONT BUY CARRIER and tell all your family, friends, and co-workers.

I have a Carrier 24ANB624A003 condensing unit matched with a 59TN6080V 17-14 gas furnace and using the communicating thermostat. The contractor that installed it used best practise methods and materials when installing the unit. That included pulling a proper vacuum in the refrigerant pipe and installing a filter dryer before opening the valves on the condensing unit. Carriers condensing units are pre-charged with enough refrigerant gas for 25 of line set. The contractor has provided me with a ten-year comprehensive warranty conditional on my having them do the annual preventive maintenance. I have 36 years of experience (now retired) as a commercial heating and air conditioning contractor and I have designed and supervised the installation of thousands of systems and am a member of the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers so I can speak with some authority on the subject. Carriers quality is as good as any other manufacturer. Problems with systems are more often that not poor installations and poorly trained technicians. If your contractor does not provide a ten-year comprehensive parts and labour warranty then choose one that does.

I have fixed this several times by putting the armature in my lathe and turning down the section in the fins that are rubbing on the switch. Attempted to get the OEM motor part number from Carrier but they refuse to give it to me. They say I have to pay a licensed HVAC dealer to get the part number. The last time I tried to get the HVAC dealer to replace my condenser fan motor, the dealer had no idea what motor I had and I had to remove the motor myself and give him the part number on the motor. Carrier has to be the most unhelpful manufacturer I have ever dealt with.

Carrier refused to cover. A year ago the compressor went out again. Carrier was willing to cover the compressor under a 10 year warranty, but not labor. My contract stated parts and labor. They later, after much negotiation, agreed to replace the condenser (including compressor) for $2500 and would extend a new warranty for 10 years parts and labor. Now the unit dies and its a circuit board. After replacing the unit would not come on again. It took 7 hours on the phone between the tech and Carrier to get it running again. Carrier support was reading a manual to help the tech figure out the problem. Their service even to a technician is a joke. I will never own another Carrier.

I have had the coil in the furnace replaced, the blower motor replaced, a leak repaired on the outside unit and once again I am without air conditioning waiting on a service call which will take 3 days. My units carry a 5 year warranty (parts only, labor was for one year I believe) which could have been extended to 10 if my units were registered (for marketing purposes I was told) within 90 days of closing on my home. With the mountain of paperwork/moving/dealing with banks/contractor I missed this deadline. I cannot say they, I wasnt handled a piece of paper at some time telling me to do so. Even though I am still in the initial warranty period, and Carrier could obtain my data for marketing purposes, they will not extend my warranty for the additional 5 years.That being said this equipment should not have failed so many times in such a short period of time. I have had no issues with any of the other appliances in my home, only my Carrier equipment. They treat their warranty like rebate cards. They know most people wont register their equipment so they can get out of the additional years of warranty. I only found out about this from a different Carrier dealer who will now be servicing my equipment. Buy something else. The equipment I have is unreliable and thus far I have not been impressed with their service. I did not have a choice as my builder had the equipment installed, when it is replaced I will stay away from Carrier.

While it is rare that I have had to call for service on the system, the few times I have, (including today) I am charged a service fee. This is the term used by the dealer so that I am paying for a service fee and they can say that I am not charged for the labor. I think it is misleading to buy parts and labor extended warranty and find the local dealer charges a service fee/call. Today, it was $112 to come out for less than 30 minutes. Granted it was on weekend after normal business hours, but the same has occurred during normal business hours.

Installer blames it on the design and components of the System and why worry, parts have a 10-year warranty. When got Carrier Rep on phone he said same thing! By the way, factory doesnt cover rust and installers labor warranty only good for one year. I am stuck with subpar parts and poor installation. Shouldnt have paid in a timely manner.

Luckily, I was able to find that it was just a run capacitor, after shocking the **out of myself, as I am not a certified HVAC guy, but it was back up and running. Over the next few years, I noticed an extreme amount of rust water coming from the drain line. Now, the A/C is broke again, this time compressor is locked up. I spent $300 to have tech come out and tell me this. He also told me that Carrier has a ten year warranty on parts. Wrong again, I talked to a manager and they said 5 years. In 09, they went to ten after the new and improved coils and compressors. The funny thing is she told me that 5- 10 years is normal life expectancy. Are you kidding me? Im a flooring contractor and if I told that to my customers, I would never get any business. Needless to say, I have a 6.5 year old house with a HVAC system that is not working and Carrier reps believe this is okay. There needs to be a class action law suit against them.

Even though the parts were covered under warranty (numerous failures have been reported with the LG compressor), Carrier refused to replace or even assist with labor cost. Imagine getting hit with a $2200 repair bill on an HVAC unit that was just over 1 year old. Terrible, terrible customer service.

This caused it to run under charged and blew the compressor. Now I need a new compressor, a new coil, a new capacitor, a new wire harness for the compressor and a new filter dryer - essentially building a new A/C unit. Carrier will cover the parts but the labor will cost $1,455 and they will not cover that cost. IF the tech agrees its a quality control issue they will see what they can do. Obviously by the number of complaints about Carriers coils, this IS a quality issue.

I would never buy or recommend a Carrier to anyone. My a/c repairman told me Amana has a lifetime warranty and there are better brands that have better warranties.

In 2006, my AC failed and I paid approximately $100 to replace freon. In 2007, I replaced freon again. In 2008, I replaced freon again and then they discovered my coil had a hole in it. In all, I spent over $500 in freon charges and labor that were not covered by the warranty in the first 4 years I owned the home. A year later, my compressor wont start and I had to fix that. Then my compressor went out a year later. Now my compressor wont start again. The HVAC people will only tell me it has age on it. It is 7 years old. I have spent over $1000 of my own money fixing it. In between the yearly (and in two cases twice yearly) breakdowns of the AC unit, my heater failed in 2009.

Three trips and the company assured me they had corrected all items. In just under three years, cooling coils on both units of the two-unit system failed and had to be replaced. Replacement coils were furnished under warranty but the bill was $1500. I hired another company to do an analysis of system. Based on this inspection, I filed a formal complaint with state licensing bureau. Finally, about $4,000 worth of corrective action was performed at no charge. Corrections included the installation of an additional return air ducting that was not installed but was on original design.Well, now 3 years and 5 months later, the cooling coil on one unit has again failed leaking out all Puron over a weekend. Carrier will not provide replacement coil under warranty. Work is being completed today and Id guess the bill will be around $1500. So HVAC repairs of $3000+ in 6 years on new home has to be considered unacceptable quality.

These are the notes from AC Tech: Found unit to have small leak in condenser coil. Appears to be in between header plate and coil making it difficult to bubble test. However video indicates a leak with electronic leak detector. Customer not interested in replacing coil under warranty at this time. Customer only wanted to charge unit. Leak will only worsen and refrigerant will leak out again and with no high or low pressure switches compressor damage could occur if unit continues to run with no refrigerant. Unit also has 45+5 mfd battery pack weak and customer declined replacing under warranty as well.

Replacement boards cost the price of a new regular air conditioner. No-one advises you that you need to perform rust prevention, this prevention, that prevention when you have it installed, but when it goes wrong they are sure to let you know. I will never again waste my hard earned money on a Carrier aircon, nor an inverter unit. A regular, modern unit consumes roughly the same power as an average fridge/freezer. The unit is supposed to be state of the art and cost over $10K. But in 2015, one year after it was put in place, the system broke down in the summer and a motor had to be replaced. Now in 2016, second year after the installation, the system broke down again and another motor has to be replaced. And it takes more than 10 days to order the motor in todays world when everything you order from Amazon can arrive in 2 days.When I called Carrier to file a complaint, the lady I spoke with was supposed to be a senior level rep, and she was even more disappointing. Please note, I wasnt even asking them for anything. My repairs are covered by a service policy I already had. I just wanted to let them know my frustration as a consumer, and I think given the good reputation I have heard about Carrier, you would think how their customers are feeling about their quality and service. Well, this lady blamed everything on distributors and installers, and said Carrier provides 10 year parts warranty and thats all they can do. She basically said Why are you wasting my time by calling me. without using those words.Well, for a state of the art system such as Carrier Infinity, you probably wouldnt expect to shut down for 2 weeks every year in the hottest days of the summer. And you would probably expect Carrier to care more about the quality and service experienced by their highest paying customers. I need to replace another old HVAC system soon and I never thought I would get anything other than Carrier. Now I will look into what other competing products are out there.

The entire evaporator coil had to be replaced on the first unit at a cost of about $1000 in July 2014. The condenser fan motor failed on the second unit just today (Aug 29, 2014). The tech from central heating said that the motor is covered by warranty, but he must still charge me $60 for the visit and $200 for the labor to replace the motor. It is simply unacceptable to pay such high prices for top-of-the-line systems and get such poor reliability. I will never purchase another product from Carrier.

However, Carrier is wiping their hands of it from this point forward. In other words, no warranty. I will also have to pay the labor and supply cost of over $900 and that is with the labor being significantly discounted by my HVAC company. I am very pleased that Carrier finally authorized this replacement. We were never informed that you must register Carrier products within 90 days to receive the advertised 10 year warranty. I called about a year after install and thought it would be an easy adjustment for them to give us the full warranty but I was told by one agent and then her supervisor that they each always register their own personal products within the required time and I should learn to do the same. I wasnt amused by their advise. They then only were willing to give the minimum 5 year parts only warranty and replaced multiple air handler blower motors, control boards, temp sensors, controls, condenser unit fan motors and more parts without paying any labor. Fortunately due to having 4 units, when one downstairs unit goes out the cool air from upstairs keeps it very comfortable in our main area of the house, and if you didnt check the thermostat you would never know one was out. Our main area unit has been out for the last 6 months. On three separate service trips to repair the unit, it would go back out between a few hours to the next day. I was unsure when our 5 year warranty was over and as it turns out we had a tech back 4 days after the expiration, and on this trip another condenser fan motor was bad. Carrier Infinity units use a very high dollar motor, the book installed price without warranty is about $1400. I called Carrier and asked about a goodwill extension on that motor but was informed that as it may have been out while under warranty, it is now a few days past the expiration so it is not covered. These failures were not due to poor installation as there are 4 units all with different problems and were installed by a company that Carrier actually recommends as a top installer and they were as well as other companies were back to try to do many repairs. This seems to be a common Carrier experience. I read comments from Carrier dealers defending the product trying to deflect criticism on other installers but thats not realistic. I hope my experience helps others decide on a purchase and remember that even if they gave a 10 year warranty, you still pay for the labor to repair unreliable equipment.

Why is it, then, that NO Carrier HVAC unit weve had installed by local business Central Air, in Texarkana,Tx, had lasted more than 10yrs? The most recent unit was purchased, new, in 2013. Whereas I never see any neighbors have HVAC companies coming to do maintenance checks on their units, and this household has always paid to have them done... what is the deal with ours not lasting as long!! I use my HVAC very frugally, doing my best to keept the temp set at 78 in the Texas summer months, and also heater wise, I keep my home CHILLY in winter. I layer up my clothes no matter if Im dressed, or if Im in my pajamas! I layer my nightgowns wearing two of them at a time, and oft times wear my robe, and perhaps even throw on one of my athletic style jackets over it!So... I mentioned my CARRIER brand HVAC --not-- lasting?? Last year--July 2019... the compressor in my Carrier blew out!! What in tarnation! I do learn that its covered by warranty, but that does NOT mean that the additional parts required, nor the labor required, nor the refrigerant which was lost= NONE of those... ABSOLUTELY NONE of those things were covered. What in the heck---is CARRIER in cahoots with its dealer??? I was still out over $600usd per having to have the compressor replaced!! And good grief, it would have been astronomical to have had to pay for a new compressor too!! I suspect that Carrier must think, oh goodness the customer will be so relieved that we covered the cost of the new compressor, that theyll simply not be aggrieved by the output of cash still necessitated by the situation!! I am still upset to this point in time, to have had to pay for more refrigerant!! To have had to pay for the labor. To have had to pay for the extra parts ruined by the compressor blowing!! Does CARRIER --NOT use quality compressors! All I can figure is that they rely on planned obsolescence to survive! But they forget, once BITTEN, TWICE SHY!!! My future will be cooled by another brand!! I am looking into Trane, and others!! CARRIER can NOT be relied upon, per my experience, and-----per my estimation. I recently did an engine search on the Carrier brand and is stated in black and white that Carrier IS essentially UNRELIABLE! Oh, and to add the CHERRY on TOP of the HVAC SUNDAE... my capacitor broke in May of 2020!! I pitched a fit, and it wound up that the HVAC tech got permission to replace my capacitor at no cost, free of charge, to me. Darn tootin! That action, and gesture, though appreciated is no salve for the financial wound caused me, by Carriers choice of compressors they place into their units! Does CARRIER NOT comprehend that $6000USD for a HVAC UNIT is expensive enough? CAN they NOT take things A step further by building QUALITY PRODUCTS! Yes, it cost us more than buying a regular window type air conditioner but because this Carrier split type has the inverter technology, it is more energy efficient therefore lower electric bills for us. It also cools the room faster and it is very quiet. You dont even know its already on because it doesnt create one sound. It also comes with a remote control that is very easy to use. And true enough, weve noticed that our electric bills have become lower the past few months that weve started using this Carrier split type air conditioner.

It has undergone consistent maintenance and service in the spring and fall every year. I contacted Carrier with the problem and they refused any assistance because the 5 year warranty has expired on the component, even though the local Carrier dealer who installed and serviced the units confirmed it is a manufacturing problem. The 3 unit models are: FV4BNF002, serial # 1606A82006; FV4BNF005, serial # 1106A87390; and FV4BNF005, serial # 4805A85599.If anyone reading this review is planning on installing a Carrier unit, please think twice and also read the 80+ other similar complaints. Also, please pass the word around so that others will not have to go through similar experience. The builder convinced us to install these Carrier units when we were considering another leading HVAC brand known for its excellent customer service and product reliability.

If you are having the types of problems Im reading about here with carrier you should change your contractor because I have no problems and have installed hundreds of these systems. If you are looking for a great system, buy carrier but make sure you also pay for a great contractor thats just as important.

The air conditioner was originally installed on May 3, 2007 and cost $7,600 for the unit and a 10 year warranty. On July 5, 2010 the compressor went out and again on May 22, 2015 the compressor went out again. After lots of phone calls and much aggravation I have found that they used Bristol compressors and would be using that same product previously installed when installing this compressor. If that compressor has a high failure rate why do they continue to use them? However they would install another condenser for $2545 (cost from Airflow cost from Carrier was $1545) made by another company. It took quite a while to get in touch with anyone that actually works for the Carrier Corporation to find out what kind of support they provide for ineffective products. I contacted the corporate offices for Carrier (5/22/2015) and they only meet once a month to discuss this kind of issue and I got a reply 3 weeks (6/15/2015) after the request for help resolving this matter. So the choices were to go with what is covered under the warranty and has gone out twice in the past 7 years or pay a large sum of money to replace this unit that seems to be problematic. What is the point of having a warranty if you are going to continue to get ineffective products installed? I am also wondering why this company thinks that I would spend that much money with them again instead of going with a company that has a better reputation! Keeping in mind that I have an extended warranty for parts and labor for this air conditioner.

Meanwhile our house is sweltering. Despite my frustration, I politely called customer service for advice and the advanced service agent was rude. Theres nothing we can do, youre outside of warranty, sorry. Buyer beware. My advice - if youre buying an AC unit, look into warranty and try to get more than five years.

The estimated cost to replace the coil (coil still under 5-year part warranty) for labor is $993 (includes the cost of 8lbs of Puron) and an additional $150-$400 to do a leak search. I am looking at approximately $1200+ for labor to repair. For a fairly expensive outlay for a piece of equipment and only lasting 3 years, this doesnt sit too well with me. After reading all the following complaints about Carrier and their evap coils, you wonder, where is their engineering on these coils? Possibly thicker copper tubing might help with the increase in operating pressures with Puron? Where is their quality control? Where is their concern for their customer base? If you keep making an inferior product (or is this planned obsolescence?), maybe Carrier needs to take lessons from Japan on making good products. My previous Payne A/C lasted approximately 35 years with only approximately 3 service calls. Needless to say, I am a very dissatisfied customer with this product. In fact, I am thinking on having this unit pulled out and buying another brand and take my loss as I have no confidence that another evap coil replacement will not fail in the future.

We’ve had more than a dozen service calls on the unit during the past three years.We are currently waiting for a replacement blower motor that has been on order for weeks now and is not due to arrive until mid October. We’ve been without air the entire summer (2019) due to our unit constantly blowing fuses. We’ve paid $600 in labor to replace all different kinds of Carrier parts that did not fix the issue. We have a parts warranty which is a joke because of expensive labor costs to fix a unit that is only three years old. The parts warranty is helpful, but the labor combined for all three repairs is now at $2000. Oh yeah, and I called Carrier (as a homeowner) to express my dissatisfaction. They towed the line on warranty terms and conditions and wouldnt transfer me to a Manager. Given my experience, I will never purchase Carrier equipment again.

I called back after over 2 weeks of not hearing, and they said they would only replace the coil, because our unit is over 10 yrs old! HUH? Its been less than 5 yrs, and they said we didnt maintain it in over 10 yrs! HUH, hello carrier? 2016 from 2011 purchase date is 5 yrs. Yes, the unit is maintained but not by your service contract. No wonder All Temp Co. Heating and Air Conditioning of Harrisburg, NC sells these. They get a lot of work out of these inferior products, over and over again. Run as fast as you can and buy a Trane. Wish we had. Maybe carrier might move back from Mexico. I guess it doesnt matter where its made if they wont stand behind their product. I think after 2 major leaks we deserved more than their attitude and bad record-keeping.

Being a dedicated Carrier dealer, technician and installer for over 20 years in SE Texas, I am sympathetic to all of the unhappy customers who have written reviews. However, just from reading the situations, I believe that the problem lies not in the equipment but in the so called installers and service techs. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of reputable Carrier dealers in any given state. I have personally went behind some of these service companies and have seen the type of installation or service that was performed. To a Factory trained technician, the remedies are often relatively easy and inexpensive to repair. The fault lies not in Carrier equipment, but in the local distributors who willingly sell Carrier equipment to any Jack leg moron who knows how to operate a thermostat. Carrier should monitor their distributorships more closely and see what companies are buying equipment and how many of these are having issues with Carrier junk. Carrier is and will remain a world leader in the HVAC industry, but like everything else, the product is only as good as the person installing or servicing it. Look really closely at your contractor before you blame Carrier. There is not one manufacturer out there who is going to cover a bad install under ANY kind of warranty.

In addition to the expense incurred and the hindrance of not having AC in 100 degrees weather, we had to twice take time off from our jobs, once to have the unit inspected and a second time to have the repairs done, which took nearly 5 hours to complete. We were disappointed to say the least and find it unacceptable that a new unit that has been in use for less than 2 years, to have such issues.To resolve the problem, we contacted Carrier and kindly requested a full reimbursement of the $375.00 cost we incurred. Per our online research, this issue has happened to other Carrier users and we deem this to be a flaw in the manufacturing of the system, and not normal wear and tear. The response back was that, while they are sorry for the inconvenience created by their system, they cant help us as they are not responsible for the labor cost we incurred! After we spent close to $7k on a new unit, I find it unacceptable to have to spend another $400 in the second year on repairs!

My entire central air conditioner would need replaced due to the condenser failing!I know a couple family members whove had their central air conditioners for over 30 years, and theyre still in working order. If this new efficient HVAC equipment cant hold up for at least 20 years, doesnt that outweigh any efficiency improvements you got out of them?! In my opinion, not only are you out of an expensive unit, but for environmental purposes- it would be better to have a less efficient system last 30 years than a more efficient system last 10! Why? Because the materials to make it end up in a landfill 3 times sooner than the old style air conditioners!If I had known this Carrier AC would have only lasted 11 years, I would have went with a less expensive brand! Whats the point paying nearly twice as much, potentially, only to have your unit completely fail 10-11 years later! PS: I recently went out and bought a new window AC. Preventive maintenance twice yearly has been consistently scheduled. Warranty was for 5 years for all parts except heat exchanger (10 years). Cost to replace both of these items was $960 less my 15% discount for being a preferred customer. VERY HIGH PRICES! The tech volunteered that Carriers prices on replacement parts is high. I found the same parts on other HVAC supplier websites for much less - I was initially not comfortable with handling the parts change out, but now seeing how it was done, could probably have done it myself & saved a bunch of $. I contacted Carrier, but got no response from them. Had asked for some $ warranty assistance since these parts failed prior to 10 years of service - my tech said that after 2010, Carrier increased their warranty to 10 years on other parts. This is the first time I have had any blower failures on a furnace earlier than 20 years of service. Apparently they just dont make em like they used to and Carrier doesnt really care about their residential consumer customers either. I wont be replacing any of this equipment (when the time comes) with Carrier!

Apparently the old systems had some sort of inner shield that reduced such noise. Why would Carrier have removed this?? The tech says the culprit for our cooling woes is an expansion valve which tends to stick. Apparently many consumers have this problem with the new Carrier units. The lines were flushed a few weeks ago to try and correct this valve issue. Here it is, just a few weeks later, and the SAME PROBLEM occurs. While waiting for the repair tech, weve suffered in a hot house and have water from frozen and leaking pipes damaging the newly-painted basement floor. Carrier apparently does not like to send replacement parts until the techs jump through many hoops. I thought Id researched brands, but I guess I was basing my decision on Carriers old reputation. Now we are stuck with an expensive new system that is faulty. It does not cool or heat our home as well as the old Carrier system, and now Im told by several techs that we should have gone with a Goodman. This is unacceptable. Carrier needs to fix its issues and replace those defective parts at no cost to the consumer and stop using delay tactics to get parts that work to the techs in a timely manner. Better yet -- build the system correctly the first time!

Drain pipe not working and float cutoff switch not working. Called night number and were told it would be 10pm, so we said come first thing in the morning Tuesday. Install: Day 5 (Tuesday) Installer came at 3pm. Said part not arrived yet, but got drain pan working. Install: Day 6 (Wednesday) Got call from dealer service department wanting to know what day the next week they could install part. I said that was unacceptable because we would not be here. After 2 calls they agree to send someone next day first thing. Install: Day 7 (Thursday) Installer came at 10am, and after what he said were hours on the phone with Carrier support they were going to install new units. The only ones available were smaller but would be fine. (Im wondering why they recommended the larger, more expensive ones in the first place.)Install: Day 8 (Friday) Installer arrives at 1pm with new units. As I write this they are installing the new units, so I decided to download the Infinity app and get ready for remote access that weve enjoyed for years with Nest. I got the app downloaded and started to register. My screen (mobile and computer) says Carrier server is down, try later. I called support and they said server has been down 11 days, and they do not have an estimated time for it to be operational. Support is open Monday-Friday, so I asked them if I must be at the thermostat to connect it to my phone. They confirm that, so because I must leave Sunday to go home I will not be able to setup remote access. I will not be able to remotely see what the temp is so I wont know if the units are working.If they dont at least get the units working correctly today I plan to have them removed and replaced with Trane units. Please notice that I have attempted to be factual and not be emotional or let my anger, frustration, and home temperature (its over 90 degrees again today) show through. I only write this to let prospective buyers know to think twice before selecting Carrier.

In 2009, I replaced two old 7 SEER and 9 SEER units with brand new high-efficiency Carrier units. Luckily, I had a friend who sold me and installed two new units for $11K. One local HVAC company asked me $22K and another asked me $15K for the same models. Thank God I didnt have $22K tied up in the mess that I bought. The downstairs unit is saving us right now. I have a box fan propped up blowing cool air upstairs, where my INFINITY SPLIT UNIT has become a piece of crap apparently. The coil was rusty and leaking freon; freezing up. I have huge water spots on my ceiling where water has overflown the drip pan, which suggest to me the float switch isnt any good either. The upstairs thermostat earlier this week registered 86 degrees. The unit was blowing but not cooling. On Saturday morning, my friend sent his brother-in-law to replace the coil in the attic. The brother-in-law told me that the air coming out of the vents should be upper 40s and at least low 50s. With a meat thermometer, he and I checked the temp for approx 30 minutes and it never dropped below 60 degrees. He said that it would cool on down after it ran for a while. It never has and after it cools for a while the air coming from vents is between 70 and 75 degrees. Today, one day after replacing the coil and with thermostat set at 70 degrees, the temp at mid-day was 79 degrees. I keep asking myself if its worth $450 to lower the temp by 7 degrees. How would you feel? Last night and all day today, I have tried probably 25 times to call and text my friend that installed the unit and sent his brother-in-law to do the dirty work and collect money. He has not replied. I dont want to criticize my downstairs unit because, like I said, it is saving us right now. However, we have had to have service calls for it two or three time during winters because it wasnt heating. Ideally, with these Carrier units, we need cold air to rise and warm air to fall and wed be fine. Doesnt work that way, huh? If you are reading this and you are about to buy a new unit for your home, please take my advice and the advice of many others below and steer clear of Carrier products. Im far from an HVAC expert, so I cant make a recommendation on which brand to buy. The only thing I can offer is to save yourself some grief and headaches and DO NOT BUY CARRIER!!!

The compressor recently failed after 10 years and 6 months. Through our HVAC repair company, we knew that Carrier has had problems with the Bristol compressors (which are no longer used) and our repair company should know since they have been a dealer for almost 30 years.I contacted Carrier customer service and customer relations personnel by telephone and I made them aware (although they didnt acknowledge) of the companys compressor problems. I asked two questions : 1) would Carrier provide some satisfaction to our situation with regard to how close to the warranty the failure occurred? and 2) if we should choose to purchase a new Carrier unit, would the company provide any type of recompense toward the cost of the new unit? Carrier provided nothing in response to my inquiries. Essentially, No, were not going to provide any measure of customer relief or satisfaction and with the tone of, nor do we really care if you take your business elsewhere. This I will certainly do!

Sure enough, without knowing the exact date of install, Carrier claims the unit is out of warranty as of November of 2012. They dont care that the same unit now currently has a warranty of 10 years (new policy as of 2009); that the unit should not have failed 5 years prematurely; and that we, at the time we called, were only 3 months over the 5-year warranty. I spoke with a supervisor Jamie at customer relations. She was curt, only would repeat their policy and could care less about the situation of the same exact unit being warrantied for 10 years now. She didnt even know what the part was nor considered that it should not have failed at least 5 years premature! Oddly enough, there was another person listening into our conversation (another supervisor, Diane ID #**). She just came on the line without identifying herself and interrupted our conversation to say they would do absolutely nothing nor consider helping. Not only did I find this company absolutely uninterested in doing what is right, you could tell they were trained to do exactly the opposite. The way they operate, having big brother ready to chime in when they can to deny a claim, was downright creepy! Do yourself a favor. Look at all these miserable reviews of this awful company and steer clear of them. I have never written a review of a company before, but if theres one person I can help by reading this, its worth it. Carrier, you truly are an awful company and should be ashamed!

The Carrier/Bryant air handler for a heat pump has a plastic pan inside the unit to catch condensation. The plastic pan material is of poor quality for the environmental temperature swings that it should have been designed in which to operate. After only 2.5 years, the pan cracked in July, water soaked the air handler insulation, and caused the ductwork to drip condensation on to the attic insulation and ruin the ceiling below the unit. The secondary protection pan under the air handler caught the water that dripped from the air handler but there was no protection for the plenum and ductwork which was collecting a vast amount of moisture from the soaked air handler. This is where the ceiling damaged occurred. Florida summers are hot and humid so the unit will produce a lot of condensation and a broken pan causes a lot of damage and high repair cost.The unit was under warranty so the replacement pan is free but the labor takes 4 hours to remove the coils, replace the pan, and replace the internal insulation in the unit. The internal insulation is not covered by the warranty so that is an extra cost. So there is about $700 of labor and insulation cost to replace a pan under warranty. Plus I need to repair my ceiling where the leak occurred. I suggest that Carrier should recall these pans and replace them with pans made of higher quality material. Perhaps made with plastic that is thicker, more flexible, and can withstand extreme heat and cold temperature swings. The pan is located next to the coil so when the heat pump is operating, the pan gets hot and obviously brittle. Also units should be designed so that parts can be quickly replaced. That seems to be a lost art. I have done some research and found that Lennox has a thicker more flexible pan that doesnt crack under normal use of the A/C and heat pump operation.

My own house I built in 2009 has three systems, has had 5 compressors replaced, 4 contractors, 3 controls and one complete condensing unit in 2015 which now does not work and my house is 81 degrees! INFINITY means as long as you have it you will have aggravation. It is junk. I live right on Long Lake Rd in Bloomfield Hills and on June 26th I will remove all Infinity equipment and replace with Trane. I will put all three furnaces and condensing units on the main road with a 12 foot banner which reads, This is the kind of junk to expect of Infinity equipment. The 2nd year it started getting expensive. Refrigerant leaks, fan motors quitting, coils leaking and needing to be replaced, drip pan cracking and leaking, pounds of Puron added, startup capacitor replaced three times, and today 2.5 pounds of Puron. The only thing that hasnt quit yet is the compressor. I have spent a great sum of money from the yearly fix up. Carrier is undependable and expensive. My buddy had similar problems with his carrier. He installed his in 2007. After the 4th year of breaking down, he called a Trane dealer and had a unit installed. Up till now never a repair. He said for me to save my money and switch to TRANE.

Our service technician told me that Carrier knew that it was faulty but would only replace the part when it failed. Now we have to have the AC coils replaced because they are leaking coolant. According to the service technician the copper tubing cannot keep up with the pressure so it needs to be replaced with aluminum. Unfortunately this part is past the 5 year warranty, by one year, and now we have to pay $1,070 to have it replaced. I would not recommend a Carrier HVAC system.

Purchased new Carrier Infinity System for my home in July 2010. The system was great until heating season. When we began using the heat, we started noticing a bad odor. I contacted the dealer who installed the system and they said it was just that the system was new. A few months later, with no change in the odor, I contacted them again and they came out and told me I must have a dead animal in the duct work. Not! The odor was not constant like it would be if it were a dead animal.Then cooling season rolled around and no problems. The system worked great. Now heating season again and again, the odor was back. Called dealer again and they came out and said they couldnt smell it. Gave it a couple weeks and called dealer again (when it was very cold outside). Finally, the technician admitted noticing the smell, but had no idea what it was. He contacted the regional Carrier representative and was told that it was Dirty Sock Syndrome. He recommended cleaning coils with Listerine and installing a UV light.Dealer wanted to charge nearly $700 to install a light to get rid of an odor that I shouldnt have in the first place. It didnt exist with my old unit. From what I have read on the Internet, the UV light will likely not solve the problem anyway.I contacted Carrier and am getting the run-around that it was my environment that was causing the problem. Nothing had changed in my environment. Same environment with old system = no foul odor. Same environment with new system = foul odor. Conclusion was that there was something with the new equipment that was not getting along with the same environment thus the only thing that had changed was the equipment.Carrier, to this point, has refused to help. This was a known issue that these manufacturers were aware of and have been aware of, but refused to warn consumers about or correct the problem. In my mind, we need a Class Action suit filed in defense of the consumers in this country that are being taken for a ride by the HVAC manufacturers.

We installed a Carrier ECO efficient heating and cooling system about 9 years ago, heating worked without any problem but the AC never worked properly. It stops around 81-82 degrees even if we set it to 76 or lower, especially for hot summer days when outside is over 90 degrees. We had Carrier dealers come to check and perform maintenance many times but no help. They said the a/c is fine but might be inside programming problem or controller problem which they cant fix and ask us to contact Carrier. Every time when we called Carrier, we were told to go to local dealers but local Carrier dealer asks us to go to Carrier. We are trying to find out if Carrier can have someone who can run a thorough diagnosis to figure out what is going on but dont know who we can approach. The a/c problem we noticed is a/c doesnt run enough time and stop (sometimes just 1 minutes) even it is far away from the temperature we set on controller (we set to 76, room temperature on controller is 84) then the a/c waits for a long time to restart then doesnt run enough time and stop again. Hope this helps us to get to the right place to fix the issue

I had my Carrier Heat Pump installed when we added on to our home back in 2009. I was told by my HVAC installer that the unit I was buying was energy efficient and came with a 10 year warranty. Today I was told by the installer that my blower motor was out and that it was under warranty. Later I was told that the 10 year warranty I was sold was not valid because I did not register it online within 90 days of the installation. We were never told by the installer that we needed to do this to have the warranty. In fact the page of information that was torn from the book and had the serial numbers on it does not even have any statement regarding the need to register the product within 90 days in order to obtain the 10 year warranty. Not even hidden in the fine print. Carrier instead requires the installer to make sure that the buyer knows that they need to register online. Both my wife and I work and we are not even sure if either of us were home when this work was completed as we had contractors working at the house. I took this all the way up to a Senior Person at Carrier. I was told by them nothing they can do, take it up with the installer. They will not allow you to go back and register your product. If this company is as good as the other installers that have posted say, then I would think that Carrier itself would allow the consumer to register the product retroactively, especially when the homeowner was not aware of the requirement. Im not even saying they should pay for the immediate service, my installer will take care of that because that falls on him, but to screw the homeowner out of the rest of the warranty shows a definite lack of support for their products. What happens now if my installer goes out of business or sells his business to someone else? I agree with the others on this blog who have wrote no Carrier ever again. I have an older Trane unit in the upstairs that has not given me one problem. I guarantee when that needs to be replaced, it wont be with a Carrier!

I just opened this website and noted that most of the Carrier reviews were terrible. This is a more advanced system than most HVAC repair companies have knowledge of or experience with. We had a bad experience a couple of summers ago (the a/c was not cooling) and it all came down to the one question I failed to ask the 2 repair companies that were sent to our home by our home warranty company: Does your company INSTALL Carrier systems? Well, (after the 2 companies had spent countless hours and replaced the evaporator coil--which did not make the problem go away), that one little question did the trick! The warranty found one company that actually had installed these systems and they came out and after an hour of hooking up the compressor to the techs computer and consulting with the engineers in Houston, the problem was identified. They replaced the compressor and that was that. We love it. The comfort it brings to our home and the money it saves with the highest efficiency system... We only wish we would have gotten a zoned system. I would recommend Carrier---but you have to get the right people to be your service technicians, preferably the company that installed it...and just take really good care of the system--do all your check-ups regularly. It is not inexpensive to purchase, so why would you just hire anyone to service it?
