Coleman Appliance Troubleshooting

For over a century, the Coleman name has been a trusted icon in America. Known for rugged dependability and tremendous value, their products stand the test of time. This heritage of quality and durability is crafted into every Coleman HVAC system that is built according to strict tolerances and rigorous testing. Coleman HVAC is proud to continue our enduring legacy by providing long lasting comfort you can count on.

Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

Coleman makes some of the toughest air conditioners on the market as they make them for homes, RV’s and more! But no matter what kind of AC you have, you’ll eventually run into some problems with it. The good news is that most of the common problems with Coleman air conditioners require only a simple fix.

The first things you should do also fall under the category of air conditioner maintenance. Even if you’re not having problems with your AC unit, you should do these things regularly anyway. The first thing is to change your filter about once a month. If your filter gets too dirty it can clog the system and affect things like the airflow and efficiency of your system.

The second thing is making sure the outdoor component of your AC unit is free of debris. Trim all plants nearby and clear leaves and branches, especially during the rainy spring and autumn as the leaves fall. This will ensure that there are no clogs and that the fan isn’t being slowed down.

Next, if your unit isn’t turning on, then make sure it’s getting power. Usually, this has to do with a circuit breaker issue. If it’s getting power but it isn’t blowing or cooling the way you expect it to, then check the thermostat. Make sure it’s set to “Cool” and that the fan is on. If there’s still a problem, then it could be an issue with the capacitors. If you’re familiar with how to check these then go for it, but if not then now is the time to call your HVAC repair company!

Furnace Troubleshooting

Not heating?
Either the circuit breaker has shorted or the unit's fuse has blown. Reset the circuit breaker associated with your Coleman furnace. If it's still not heating correctly, you'll want to replace the fuse.
The igniter has cracked or become defective. Locate the igniter within your Coleman furnace and inspect the part for cracks. If it's damaged then you'll have to replace the part. Otherwise, test it with a multimeter for continuity to see if it's defective.

Cycling irregularly?
Your thermostat might be calibrated improperly and as a result, is adjusting incorrectly. Check to see if your thermostat has an adjustable calibration scale, if so then use this to adjust the heat anticipator. If this doesn't appear to work or you don't have a scale, replace the thermostat completely.

Not blowing hot air?
The blower motor in your Coleman furnace is either burnt out or it's connecting belt has broken. You'll have to inspect the motor to see if power is reaching it. If it does but the motor continues to function incorrectly, then the blower motor has failed. However, if the motor continues to run, but the air still isn't moving, then the connecting belt has broken. Depending on the situation, you'll have to replace the motor or the belt.

Blowing too much air?
The control board is experiencing difficulty. The board's relay that regulates how much voltage is sent to the blower motor is defective. You will have to replace the control board.
The contact on your thermostat responsible for controlling the blower motor is defective. Use a multimeter to check for continuity, if the thermostat isn't working properly then replace it.

Starting and then stopping shortly after?
The flame sensor used to detect whether or not a flame is present requires attention. The sensor has become either dirty or defective. Use a fine abrasive pad to clean the sensor if it appears to be dirty. If it's defective then replace the sensor altogether.

Heat Pump Troubleshooting

Here are some general troubleshooting tips for a Coleman heat pump:

Check the power supply: Ensure that the heat pump is receiving power by checking the circuit breaker or fuse box. If a breaker has tripped or a fuse has blown, reset or replace it accordingly.

Check the thermostat settings: Make sure the thermostat is set to the desired temperature and mode (heat or cool). Verify that the fan setting is appropriate (auto or on) and that the system is not in a temporary hold or vacation mode.

Inspect the air filter: A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow and impact the heat pump's performance. Check the air filter and clean or replace it if necessary. It's generally recommended to clean or replace the filter every 1-3 months.

Check the outdoor unit: Ensure that the outdoor unit is clear of debris, such as leaves, grass, or dirt. Remove any obstructions that may obstruct airflow. Additionally, check if the outdoor coil is clean and free from dirt buildup.

Verify the indoor registers and vents: Ensure that the supply registers and return vents are not blocked or obstructed by furniture, curtains, or other objects. Clear any obstructions to allow proper airflow throughout the system.

Check the condensate drain: If the heat pump has a condensate drain, inspect it for clogs or blockages. A clogged drain can cause water to back up and potentially shut down the system. Clear any obstructions or consult a professional for assistance.

Check for error codes: If the heat pump displays an error code, consult the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer's customer support for guidance on troubleshooting the specific error.

Schedule professional maintenance: Regular professional maintenance is essential for optimal performance and to identify any underlying issues. Consider scheduling annual maintenance with a qualified HVAC technician to ensure your Coleman heat pump operates efficiently.

If you've followed these troubleshooting tips and the issue persists, it's recommended to contact a qualified HVAC technician for further diagnosis and repair. They have the expertise and tools to identify and resolve more complex issues with your Coleman heat pump.

Coleman Heat Pump was installed in our new build in 2016. First the pan busted in 2016. 2020 evaporation coils had to be replaced $1400.00, then in 2022 the compressor needed replacing $2200.00, and finally the expansion values need replacing. Quote to fix $1400.00. We refused to put another dime in this piece of junk, so we replaced with a Trane. Coleman parts take time to arrive and their units are nothing but problems and money. Your warning, stay away from any Coleman.

Being HVAC technician, I have installed this unit on some my clients, and all I can stress is that it is a good unit as long as the installation process is performed by someone who perfectly knows when he is doing and not just anyone. The mistake that many users do is to install a unit without the help of an expert, this leads to poor installation, and the unit starts having problems too early, and some do not even end. Proper installation of any unit is essential if you want your furnace to last long enough. The only bad thing I had with this unit is the unit being a little noisy; the manufacturer should do something about the noise. The price is friendly, and I would recommend this to my clients at any given time.

Have a Coleman heat pump. It went out within 30 days of the end of the warranty. Service people say that the pipe into the compressor is too thin and they were unable to plug the corroded hole. Need a new compressor even though it works because of a pipe. Getting estimates. Definitely not on a Coleman product.

I agree that the installation is the main point when it comes to gas furnaces. I am nothing but satisfied by this brand of Coleman. My previous gas furnace kept on leaking and made my house messy, and I had had to clean often. I always called the technician to do repairs who later on recommended to me the Coleman unit. It’s highly efficient without too much cost of the gas bill. It was also affordable, and the installation was easy.

Our furnace and air conditioner are both Coleman, and they have lasted for ten years. The AC always needs replacement although this is not part of the furnace and we cannot complain about this. The high energy conversion rate as a result of the AFUE high levels makes it the best for me. I have not had any replacements or repairs so far, and I hope I will not have any problems with my furnace. The price is manageable, and I would recommend this to anyone who needs a gas furnace that is not too pricey and works efficiently.
