Furnace Repair

Start at the thermostat
Begin your furnace troubleshooting at the thermostat. Ensure that the thermostat is on heat and the setpoint is above room temperature. (It is best to turn it to the highest setting possible while performing troubleshooting.) If the furnace fan is not running, place the fan in the on mode.

Is the power on to the furnace?
If the fan is not running, check the breaker, fuse, and/or the switch for the furnace. If the breaker was tripped, leave it off and check the furnace wiring for loose connections. Also, you should look for burn spots on the control board and replace the board if spots are found. After any necessary repairs, the breaker can be reset.
If the breaker or fuse was not tripped, look into the inspection window of the blower compartment on the furnace. You should see a flashing green light. If there is no light (neither red or green) then the problem could be the transformer, thermostat, furnace control board, the blower motor, or it's run capacitor.
If you have a condensate pump, ensure that it's reservoir is not full. On most units there is a float switch that will stop the furnace from running if the reservoir is full. If the reservoir is full, then check the power to the unit and replace the pump as required.
After the blower motor is running, the fan can be placed back in the automatic mode at the thermostat.

Does the furnace have a pilot light?
If the furnace uses a standing pilot, ensure that it is lit and the flame is touching the tip of the thermocouple. If it is not, you can use our thermocouple replacement guide for further troubleshooting.
If the pilot is lit but the main burners do not come on, you should feel the side of the furnace. If the side of the furnace is cool, the problem could be the thermostat, furnace control board, limit control, or the gas valve.

Does the pilot or main burner try to ignite?
On units that use a spark ignition, you can hear the pilot or main burner try to ignite as it will have a rapid clicking noise.
If the inducer motor is running, does the pilot (or main burner) try to ignite?
If it does not, the flue could be blocked, the furnace control board could be bad, or the limit control could be the problem.
If the pilot (or main burner) tries to light but goes out, the pilot assembly or flame sensor could be dirty. Our guide will show you how to clean them.
On furnaces that do not use a spark ignitor, does the hot surface ignitor come on? (You will see a bright glow in the burner compartment if it is trying to come on) If not, the ignitor may need replacement or the furnace control board could be bad.

Do the main burners come on?
Once the pilot or ignitor is on, do the main burners light? If not, ensure that you have gas supplied to the furnace. (You can do this by checking to make sure all of the manual isolation valves are on.) If you have gas, the problem could be the gas valve or furnace control board.
If the burners come on but do not stay on for more than about 3 seconds, the flame sensor could be dirty or the furnace control board could be bad.
On condensing furnaces, if the burners come on for longer than 5 seconds but turn off before the thermostat is satisfied, the condensate drain could be plugged.
Most of these units have a built in trap and sediment can build up in it. This can cause the furnace to operate abnormally.

Does the blower come on now?
Once the burners stay lit, the blower motor should start after a delay of from one to three minutes. If the blower does not start, the problem could be it's run capacitor or the motor.

Furnace Troubleshooting, Final Checks
You should complete your furnace troubleshooting by observing the unit's operation through a complete heating cycle. At the end of the cycle, the fan should run for about 2-3 minutes after the burner shuts off. If the fan does not shut off after the time delay, then the fan/limit control (on older units) may be sticking and require replacement. During this time you can check the temperature rise across the furnace. Using a thermometer, check the temperature of the air coming out of the registers and compare it to the average room temperature. On the inside of the furnace, you will find a label plate that tells you the range that this the difference between the temperatures should be. (On older furnaces, it could be over 100 degrees while, on newer high efficiency units, it could be as low as 35.)

Recently had a tank less hot water heater installed. Really pleased with Northern Continental. My sales guy, Dan, was very thorough and patiently answered all questions that I had. The sales process easy -- no pressure, just looking to provide us with what we wanted. Our install was scheduled the week after we put our deposit down. Our installer, Scott, was very good. Took about 6 hours from beginning to end on the install. We are very pleased with our experience with Northern Continental.

What can I say? This company is incredible!!! Jeff came out the day before and tried to service our old air conditioner on it's last legs and milked it for one night to allow us to be able to get a new system in the next day. Martin and Bogdan were precise, efficient, and extremely professional. I can't recommend this company enough. What could have turned into a disaster with us having to stay at a hotel ended up being saved at the last minute with a brand new system sitting on a hurricane slab. The air started immediately dropping the minute the new system turned on. And they also didn't sell me on what I didn't need they were extremely informative so that I got exactly what I needed. They were dog friendly super respectful and they Treated my house like they're own:)

We can't say enough nice things about Continental. Our AC went out on a Saturday night and we asked to have someone come out the next day. They were there on time and gave us several options to fix our issue. We opted to have the whole heating/cooling system upgraded and it was completely finished Monday afternoon. I'd recommend them to anyone wanting different price points to choose from, rather than a "one size fits all" type of sales pitch that some companies throw at you. Thank you SO much!

Continental has a fair amount of features that make it a good buy for the long-term. Most parts pull double-duty, such as the swept fan blades that maximize airflow and also reduce noise from the operation. The filter drier operates similarly, keeping out dust and debris from your unit but also increasing longevity by preserving performance.

Called Northern Continental because my AC stopped working, of course on what was to be the hottest weekend of the year thus far. It was today, the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. I tried several other companies before coming across their name and giving them a call. The other companies could not work me in. Northern Continental said they would work me in the same day. Called at 9:15AM and the Tech, Dave, was on site by 10:30AM. That is excellent customer service. Dave was super friendly and got my system charged back up and functional. All in all, great company, great experience, and great customer service. I highly recommend them and will be contacting Northern Continental in the future! Thanks a million!!

I needed a new furnace and air conditioner. I specifically wanted a Trane, Carrier or Lennox brand. After researching 4 companies, I had each of them come out and give me a quote. Unfortunately, for Carrier and Lennox, I could not find one that was accredited to do installations or was a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and their prices were extremely high. I found that Northern was accredited and has been a member of the BBB since 2007 and has an A+ rating. I chose them. On the day of my inspection, Dan was on time and wearing his face mask. He did his inspection and within 2 days, I had my quote. It was very reasonable. I chose them to do the installation. On the day of the installation, the installers showed up on time, with their face masks. Everything went fine! They did their job, cleaned up after themselves, had me pay and that was it. Smooth as gravy! I would recommend them to anyone!

My aunt Brandi had bought a new Bryant air conditioning system from continental and the AC works amazing. Her thermostat was as 77 and within 2 minutes it dropped to 75. The 2 gentlemen who installed the unit were very friendly and knowledgable and installed it quickly and cleaned up. The pricing is very competitive with other places She called and the service was excellent. The owner even called the same day to check on how it was running and to see how her service experience was. I would recommend them to anyone I know who needs repair or a new unit. Keep up the great work!

After a search of all the local AC repair shops, I called this one, because it was the only one that had a review from an Elite Yelper. Basically all the other locals have a lot of reviews, and a lot of positives, but the accounts are suspicious, with few friends and only a handful if not only 1 review. Northern Continental was the first with some believable and useful comments. So I set up an appointment online and was immediately contacted by Tess, to share more info and set a date and time. Tess was patient and helpful and was able to answer many of he preliminary questions I had. Based on this experience, the business felt legitimate and worth proceeding further. Eric came to the house as scheduled. He diagnosed the capacitor and fan motor in about 10 minutes. He walked me through the why's and how's and gave me options and fair prices. The cost came up very fair, based on my researching local competitors. Eric was professional, polite, knowledgeable, customer focused, and he got the job done in less than an hour. I would highly recommend this company to the local community.
