how do pool heat pumps work

how do pool heat pumps work
Posted On: November 22, 2021

If you own a pool, then you probably have something to warm it up, whether it's a heater or a heat pump. While a heater and a heat pump both do the same job, a heat pump works a bit differently than a heater.

Despite their name, heat pumps don't generate heat. Instead, they use the air warmed by the sun. A fan then distributes the air through an outer evaporator air coil. Liquid refrigerant within the coil absorbs the heat and converts it into a gas.

The pool pump will then distribute the pool water extracted from the pool and move it through the filter and the heat pump water heater. The water is then heated 3-5 degrees as it moves through the heat exchanger, and then the warm water is pumped back into the pool.

Heat pumps work better when the air outside is warm, about 45-50°F. The cooler the air is outside, the more the heat pump needs to work, using more energy. However, since most pool owners use their pool during the warmer months, this shouldn't be an issue.

So how often should you run your heat pump? The answer to that question depends on how often you use your pool and the size of it. But it's recommended that you keep it running all the time because if you only run it when you're using it, it could end up costing you more in the long run.

A heat pump that only runs when the pool is used will need to heat the water by 20°F. But if you don't want to keep the heat pump running, you can purchase a solar pool cover to keep the heat from escaping. A pool cover also keeps the pool clean.

Despite heat pumps needing warm air to work efficiently, they do not require direct sunlight to work. But they do need to have direct access to fresh air. Avoid installing them close to walls or fences. And the windier the area is, the better they will work. You should also make sure you can see the electrical connections.
