How long does it take for an oven to self-clean
Posted On: September 6, 2021

Depending on the amount of food build-up, cleaning your oven can be a major chore that can take up most of your time and energy. However, depending on the age and model of your oven, it just may have a self-clean option.

Some oven owners are wary of using the self-clean option because it uses high heat to clean. But, when used properly, not only does this option save you time, it is also much easier on your body as you don't need to bend over or use a mask to avoid breathing in the harsh chemicals that go along with the cleaning products.

Before starting the cleaning cycle, you need to remove any racks, trays, foils, or any other removable pieces. It's important to know that you should not be using oven cleaning products during the self-clean process.

Along with not using any chemicals, you should never leave your house during the self-clean cycle due to the high heat, and if there is a lot of food build-up, smoke could occur. The self-clean process can take one to three hours, depending on the model.

Once the cleaning process has finished and the oven is cool, take a damp cloth or sponge to remove any ash or leftover residue.

The only part of the oven you must clean yourself is the door, as it does not get cleaned during the self-clean process. You can clean this with a cloth or sponge and hydrogen peroxide.

Even though the self-clean option can save you time, you shouldn't skip regular cleanings. By cleaning your oven and racks regularly, you will avoid any smoke or odors during the self-clean cycle. But don't use any chemicals, just water, and a cloth will do.

The self-clean option should be run every month, depending on how much you use it. And if you're running it during the summer months, it's best to run it late at night or early in the morning, as the high heat can be taxing on your air conditioner.

You should always refer to your oven's manual if you're unsure how to run the self-clean or any other options.
