How Often Should I Change My AC Filters?
Posted On: January 15, 2021

Learning when to change your AC filters is an important factor that all homeowners need to keep in mind. Typically, it depends on a variety of factors, including pets in the home, your indoor air quality, the type of filter, the level of construction, and air pollution.

HVAC professionals recommend that you change your AC filters every 30-60 days on average. But, depending on your home, an annual air filter change may be fine.

If your home contains pets, a good average for changing your air filters is every 60 days. However, an average suburban home without pets would be every 90 days.

You can evaluate how long it takes to change a filter by checking your AC filters every week. If light cannot be dispersed through the filter, it’s time for an air filter change.

In terms of the type of filter, it is important to note the MERV rating. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The quality of the filter directly correlates with the number on the MERV scale. The higher the number, the higher the quality of your filter. It is important to note that a high MERV rating does not necessarily translate to a filter that needs to be changed less frequently. It’s good to shoot for a filter in the 6-8 range of the MERV scale.

It is important to change your air filters regularly to maintain air quality and lower energy bills.
