Water heater not heating
Some gas water heaters have a thermocouple. The thermocouple detects the pilot flame. If the thermocouple does not detect a flame, it will prevent the gas valve from opening. The gas valve opens to allow gas to enter the burner. If the gas valve does not open, the burner will not light, and the water heater will not heat. First, ensure that the ignition source is working properly. Second, ensure that the gas valve has pressure. If the ignition source is working, and the gas valve has pressure, consider replacing the gas valve and thermostat.

Water heater leaking
The temperature and pressure relief valve opens to stabilize temperature or pressure of the water heater if the temperature or pressure exceeds the proper level. The temperature and pressure relief valve opens at a set temperature. This temperature is indicated on the water heater. If the temperature and pressure relief valve leaks even though it has not reached the indicated relief temperature, replace it. The drain valve can be opened to drain the water heater for maintenance or to flush out mineral deposits from the tank. If the drain valve is leaking, drain the tank and replace the drain valve.

Water heater not lighting
Some water heaters use an igniter to ignite the gas. If the igniter fails, the burner will not light. To determine if the igniter is defective, first make sure the igniter is getting voltage. If the igniter is getting voltage, but it doesn’t glow, this indicates that the igniter is defective and should be replaced. The pressure switch closes when the proper airflow is achieved, signaling the control board to continue the ignition process. If the pressure switch is defective, the ignition process will stall, and the water heater will not light.

Water heater too hot
The thermostat determines the maximum water temperature setting. If the thermostat is defective, the water temperature may not be set at the proper level. To determine if the thermostat is defective, assess hot water temperature from the nearest faucet. If the water temperature is hotter than the selected thermostat setting, this indicates that the thermostat is defective. If the thermostat is defective, replace the gas valve and thermostat assembly. We recommend a set temperature of 120 degrees or fewer to prevent the risk of scalding. If the heating element is shorted out, it will heat continuously, causing the water to get too hot. To determine if the heating element is shorted out, use a multimeter to test if the element is shorted to ground. If heating element is shorted out, replace it.

My husband and I installed this ourselves. We went from an electric 50 gallon water heater to this. First, I did a lot of research, looked up the codes in our county and city and made a plan. I bought this tankless water heater in the summer, It took me several months to install as I had to remodel the room it was going into first. The hardest part was cutting a hole through some bricks to make sure the venting would fit everything else was pretty easy. I just ran a gas line and ordered the proper venting. The water lines were pretty much where they needed to be. Once all the lines were in place the heater went up in a day. We have been using the heater for about a month now. The outside temp got down to the teens for a few weeks. I can honestly say I love the heater. I do not have to worry about saving any hot water for my husbands shower because there is a never ending supply. We had people over and they also enjoyed the ability to shower without waiting for the water to heat up. The guest shower is a little farther from the heater and they did say the faucet took a little longer to demonstrate the change in temp. Not sure if that is due to the heater or the faucet. My kitchen is the farthest from the heater and it does take a couple minutes to get hot water to the faucet. I have found that if I rinse the dishes with hot water, then the dishwasher has plenty of hot water. My gas bill did not go up much over the last month (it was a lot colder and the increase could have been from the house heater). I have not gotten an electric bill yet but I bet it will be way less. The heater is not even as loud as my washer or dryer, so I am not sure why others have said it was loud. I will never go back to a tank system.

As for the performance, we have a bit smaller house with only a few feet of water line between this unit and out faucets. It takes about 30 seconds for the water to come to temp. We absolutely love it!

The Rinnai R85 that came w my house started leaking at 12yrs old so I bought the RL75iN. My goal was to buy the closest model to the older model so I could use the existing exhaust pipe, water connections, and gas connection, as I'm not the handy type. It all went fairly smooth since the exhaust, water, and gas connections are in the same spot on the new model. Just a WARNING if you attempt this the inner metal layer of the exhaust pipe corroded/welded about 6 pieces together, in the process of pulling out the old R85 a couple of the black seals broke (brittle from age) that seal the outer plastic exhaust pipe together, due to this corrosion/welding I had to buy all 6 pieces again (I used something like WD-40 to bust apart the corrosion seams, DON'T do this!!! the pieces remained welded together plus the WD-40 warps all of the seals), which ment 4 more days without hot water and expedited shipping costs for these parts. Don't make my mistake, if you're doing a retro-fit make sure your existing exhaust pipe isn't damaged and if it is get those pieces ordered when you order the RL75iN. I read a lot of reviews before doing this, I used white ptfe tape on the water, and yellow ptfe on the gas threads. Best hint I came across was from old timer plumber and also used Rectorseal #5 on top of the taped threads. Worked great, piece of mind was worth the few bucks for the #5. Good luck! Also it is really handy to have a buddy hold up the unit while you bolt it to the wall.

I purchased this over a year ago but I just got around to installing it. I installed it in my basement. I put a 10" extension directly above it, a 45 degree elbow, and 11' of extensions to get it out beyond my deck. It seems to be running fine. I put a small slope on the extension to allow the condensation to run out instead of back into the unit. So I didn't put an condensation system on the side pipe. So far it's working great. It does take a little while to reach equilibrium but this isn't my first On-Demand hot water heater and this was expected. I keep it set at 120 F but I doubt that's what's coming out of the faucets. I'm not sure why that is but it's hot enough and the flow is pretty good so I'm not complaining. Now I'm just waiting for my first whole electric bill to see how much savings I'll get from getting rid of my electric hot water heater.
