Westinghouse Water Heater Repairs

If you're looking for help fixing your Westinghouse Water Heater, look no further! Our comprehensive Westinghouse Water Heater repair guide will explain common issues, provide tips, and maybe show you how to repair your appliance.

For the home, kitchen and beyond, Westinghouse manufactures appliances that homeowners have come to trust. Even a trustworthy appliance requires occasional maintenance or repair, however. If you’re in need of Westinghouse appliance repair from experienced professionals, your local Appliance Helper can help.

Water heater not heating
Some gas water heaters have a thermocouple. The thermocouple detects the pilot flame. If the thermocouple does not detect a flame, it will prevent the gas valve from opening. The gas valve opens to allow gas to enter the burner. If the gas valve does not open, the burner will not light, and the water heater will not heat. First, ensure that the ignition source is working properly. Second, ensure that the gas valve has pressure. If the ignition source is working, and the gas valve has pressure, consider replacing the gas valve and thermostat. The pilot ignites the water heater’s gas burner. If the pilot does not light, the water heater will not heat. Sometimes, carbon deposits can build up on the pilot and eventually create a restriction. If the pilot is restricted, try removing it and clearing it with a stiff brush and/or compressed air. If the pilot cannot be cleaned, replace it.

Water heater leaking
The temperature and pressure relief valve opens to stabilize temperature or pressure of the water heater if the temperature or pressure exceeds the proper level. The temperature and pressure relief valve opens at a set temperature. This temperature is indicated on the water heater. If the temperature and pressure relief valve leaks even though it has not reached the indicated relief temperature, replace it. The drain valve can be opened to drain the water heater for maintenance or to flush out mineral deposits from the tank. If the drain valve is leaking, drain the tank and replace the drain valve.

Water heater not lighting
Some water heaters use an igniter to ignite the gas. If the igniter fails, the burner will not light. To determine if the igniter is defective, first make sure the igniter is getting voltage. If the igniter is getting voltage, but it doesn’t glow, this indicates that the igniter is defective and should be replaced. The pressure switch closes when the proper airflow is achieved, signaling the control board to continue the ignition process. If the pressure switch is defective, the ignition process will stall, and the water heater will not light. The thermocouple detects the pilot flame. If the thermocouple does not detect a flame, the ignition process will stall, and the burner will not light.

Water heater too hot
The thermostat determines the maximum water temperature setting. If the thermostat is defective, the water temperature may not be set at the proper level. To determine if the thermostat is defective, assess hot water temperature from the nearest faucet. If the water temperature is hotter than the selected thermostat setting, this indicates that the thermostat is defective. If the thermostat is defective, replace the gas valve and thermostat assembly. We recommend a set temperature of 120 degrees or fewer to prevent the risk of scalding. If the heating element is shorted out, it will heat continuously, causing the water to get too hot. To determine if the heating element is shorted out, use a multimeter to test if the element is shorted to ground. If heating element is shorted out, replace it.

I installed this hot water heater in May 2016 and it has been working fine to date. I replaced another quality 80 gallon hot water heater that was 22 years old and was still operational with no leaks and original heating elements. The water heater is hooked into a geothermal water furnace and provides sufficient hot water for my family of 4 without ever runnig out of hot water. I suspect this Westinghouse 80 gallon 4500 watt hot water heater will last as long.

This is a great product and is working wonderfully. It was in great shape and was easily installed by the plumber. On the other hand, shipping was a nightmare scheduled 12/28/2017 (verified via web and LIVE person) finally arrived 1/2/2018. We had been without hot water for 10 days and had a plumber was lined up for installation after our scheduled window of delivery (9 am to noon). No delivery and no call. I talked to the manufacturer who reported that the product had been delivered to the delivery company. The delivery company had no record that the product had arrived and I had to call back the next day to see if it came in. The next day, the delivery company received the heater, never called and when I called them they were unable to schedule the delivery for the next day. Hence, I was unable to have hot water for an additional 5 days. The person that I spoke with both times acted like it was a bother to help me figure where my water heater was in THEIR delivery system.

I don't know if this has spotty quality issues or what - I have had no problems with this water heater at all. You have to be aware that this is a new design - a water heater without an anode and regularly each month drain five gallons according to the instructions and no problems. If you don't I can imagine rust building up and causing all sort of problems. Again this is an anodeless system so you must drain it. What I liked about this heater is that it doesn't have all the claptrap that many heat pump systems have and should have a much better reliability.

Excellent unit. So nice to get a hot bath! Delivery professional and on time. They called when they were on their way and brought it into my home! Paperwork reads you must have a licensed plumber install the unit or void the warranty. We had planned to install ourselves as it isn't difficult, but called a plumber to be safe. Overall happy with the unit and process! Just plan for a plumber's fee if you want the warranty to be valid. Update...6 months later unit caught fire due to defect. Trying get a replacement. On our 5th day with no hot water again with 6 people in our home. Have to pay the plumber again and dispense of defective unit on our own.

I have been the last one in the shower the past 14 years. Needless to say my 50 gallon unit was just too small for me not to freeze. So when my old heater started seeping I started shopping. To my discovery HD and L**wes no longer carry simple 80 gallon heaters. The big box stores want to sell you a hybrid, so I was looking at a 80 gallon hybrid for 1800 bucks and a potential jackpot once the heat exchanger failed. Something made me look at Amazon and I found this beauty. Ordering was simple and the delivery date and time was selected. The truck pulled up at 0915 and the guys rolled it into my garage in its crate. This thing a monster, just about 6 feet tall and fatter than my old unit. My water connections come out of the wall, so be prepared to raise them up at least 12-18 inches. Other than that it was a simple install. I spent about 2 hours start to finish. Yes, you will need a work platform or ladder to reach the top for your connections. The initial heating took about 3 hours for the first shower but 12 hours to temperature stabilize. We also noticed that the flow rate seems to be faster as our farthest shower now seems to heat up faster. I don't know how this will effect my electric bill (I think it will be a wash), but its so nice not to have to schedule my shower for an empty house.
