Rheem and Richmond are of the same company. They make the worst water heaters on the planet. Junk. I have been through 4 water heaters in 3 years. I kept buying Rheem and Richmond because they fit perfectly and they were the cheapest. All I could afford at the time but I would pay again next year when I had to buy another one. Finally three years 4 water heaters later I bought an American made one!Do not by Rheem or Richmond. If you do I promise in less than a year you will be installing a new one and their warranty is a joke. 3-year warranty. None of mine lasted three years and I couldn't get anything replaced, fixed, refunded. Horrible customer service. Buy any other brand than this. Save yourself the hassle. Spend a little bit more money and get a good brand. I'm so sick of replacing hot water heaters. I hate that company. They know it's going to break in a year and you'll have to buy another one. I was foolish enough to keep doing that. Never again. I will not buy anything Rheem or Richmond for the as long as I live.

I had a Rheem water heater in my new house, only 3 1/2 years old. It ended up being defective and needing replacement. It was very difficult getting any assistance in replacing it. I found a plumber to assist with the installation. I found the wholesaler where my builder purchased the water heater. After 9 months dealing with the wholesaler, I finally was able to get a water heater. I paid the plumber $550.00 for installation, knowing that Rheem would likely cut me a check for this cost. Found out, Rheem was going to let me eat this cost. I would not have incurred this cost if it were NOT for a defective water heater. I was told by a Rheem representative that this cost is not in the warranty. Sorry but very poor business. I will not purchase or recommend any Rheem products because of this.

They don't make water heaters like they used to, that's for sure. I bought a house a few years ago with a Sears water heater in it from 1977. It lasted until 2009. I had a new Rheem water heater put in March 2014. It failed May 2021, right after the 6 year warranty. The heater element rusted right through the tank, and this is a water heater that was connected to a water softener, so no hard water going through it at all.Waste of money and it looks like I am not alone. Rheem needs to go back to see what Sears was doing. Same with all these companies that supply water heaters to Lowe's and Home Depot. A water heater should not be a disposable item. They should last 20 years, just like they did years ago. And for us consumers, we need to wake the hell up to the way companies like Rheem operate. Sure, Sears didn't keep up with the times, and Amazon is killing places like Sears. BUT, that doesn't mean that we should all be a bunch of suckers, getting water heaters replaced every decade. What a joke.

We have now been without hot water for 9 days. We own a Whirlpool water heater that has a sticker on it saying to call the American Water Heater company for repairs. The control panel on the top of the water heater stopped working so we called AWH Company. They first told me that we had a lifetime warranty and took my serial number. Then after looking up the part, they said the cost would be $107.00. This included overnight shipping which cost $30 which of course you would pay for because no one wants to be without hot water any longer than necessary. However, it was after hours so it was actually going to take 2 days to get to us. When that part arrived and we carefully followed the instructions to install (we have remodeled many houses so we are not a novice) the part was damaged and did not work. We called back and they told us they would send another part but of course it was after hours again and it would be 2 more days. When the part did not arrive, we called back a third time and were told that order did not exist but they would order it again. By this time we are in the middle of the Christmas holiday so we are waiting three days. Last night, I called a fourth time and we reordered the part again. Some of the agents did not know that the shipping dept was closed on Dec. 26 so the part should be shipping today and arrive tomorrow. 10 days after we have started this whole ordeal. When I asked for my money to just be refunded, they refused and said they would be shipping the part.

I wanted a new hot water heater as the original 27 year old unit was starting to go, so my husband went to the local Lowe's and picked up a Whirlpool 40 gallon electric heater. First one didn't work and neither did the second one. We tried to follow all the recommendations by the help desk, nothing. We did research and found that 95% of a batch of 40 and 50 gallon shipped out had defective heating elements in them.

Purchased Whirlpool gas hot water heater from LOWE'S on 9/25/2016. After the installation, tried to light the pilot light for 90 minutes. Followed the recommended instructions, I could not get it to light. Called LOWE'S they told me to call Whirlpool. I did so, and told them I will return the heater to LOWE'S the next day. Whirlpool customer service very bad. Returned the heater to LOWE'S the next morning, went to a local plumbing shop and purchased a Rheem heater. After installation it lit very first attempt. Now three weeks later I get a letter in mail from collection agency that LOWE'S turned me in for stopping payment on the check I wrote them. After reading the many negative reviews and they disregard for my and my family's safety, nobody should purchase a Whirlpool gas heater from LOWE'S.

These are garbage. Ours leaked flooding our basement and they will not replace under warranty. Stay away from this company's products, the tank was not even 4 yrs. old.

I have had to replace my Whirlpool 50-gallon hot water heater 2 times. First time it broke, it caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damages plus I'm out a $760.00 deductible. I had the last one just over 1 month and couldn't exchange it at Lowe’s because it’s a few days over a month. So I had to get return authorization before I could return it again. I went through speaking to a hateful CSR. After calling back again, the lady, a real nice lady, helped me. I will never buy another Whirlpool product again, and if anyone is smart, they will stay away from them too. Hateful, hateful CSR. Beware.

Our Reliance water heater was installed in 2014 spring or summer (factory date October 2013). It is leaking. Still shining and looks like brand new, just out of the factory. Need replacement. By reading all the reviews on this site, I have come up with the conclusion that, it does not matter which brand, the industry is gearing toward DISPOSABLE - water heaters every 6 years and replacing them with the ones does not last long (like in old times). The more recent installation, the more likely it will need replacement. Check all the reviews on this site. Seems like everyone comment who had the installed 10-25 years ago, they lasted much longer. Those times are gone. My new water will be installed this Friday and I talked to company who installs and I said - it does not matter which brand because I do not expect is last more than 6 years. It has become with all the technological advancements (should last longer), exactly the opposite. They make that they last fewer years to get more money out of consumers.

Mind you, Whirlpool products that we have purchased in the past have been satisfactory, but gas hot water heaters, no! About four years ago we purchased a Whirlpool hot water heater that went out in a little over a year. After spending many calls and time, we found out that the HWH was on soft recall. Whirlpool credited our account, but this was to purchase another Whirlpool, which we did. We paid for installation. About 2 years later, it has gone out. Same problem. Lowes says not their problem. Whirlpool says it will pay for the part only. Plumber will cost 150-200 dollars. All the plumbers I have talked to will not repair them, then they are held responsible when it goes out! As a disabled Vet I cannot afford to throw 400-600 dollars away. And, Whirlpool tells me that if they give me an RA number to replace the HWH, it will have to be a Whirlpool from Lowes. Great! Whirlpool quarterly report looks very good. Mine doesn't look as good. What can be done about a poor working product? Or is this too big to fail? Let me know.
