My plumber installed an American Water Heater 12/14/2012 for $4999.50. On 12/28/14 water began pouring out of the bottom. We called our (former) plumber to ask about warranty coverage and he hung up. Researching further, I find that American Water Heaters used commercially have a 1 year warranty (my new water heater has a 3 year warranty on the glass tank). I can see why American's warranty coverage is shorter. If American is using inferior parts to make more money, then covers themselves by making their warranty period super short, the savings to consumers is offset by water heaters that may fail in 2 years. I'll never buy an American Water Heater again!

I am a licensed plumbing contractor. For 15 years I had installed another brand, which was completely reliable. One of my suppliers started carrying American Pro Line and were telling me how great they were, so I started installing them for a period of about 2 years. One of the worst decisions I have ever made as a contractor. The American Pro Line water heaters started using a Honeywell gas control valve. On many of my customers' water heaters, these valves would stop working within a few months. Others stopped working after the first year. Their warranty is parts and labor for the first year, but parts only on the 2nd-6th years. So in many cases, I have had to make several service calls to get my customers' water heater working and have lost time and money in doing so. For a few customers, there have been repeated problems to the extent that we replaced the whole gas control valve with a new one up to three times and still continued to have problems. American Water Heaters has tried to blame the problem on my customers' gas pressure in one case. At another customer's house, after several attempts to repair the American water heater, we installed another brand at that house since the American water heater kept giving us problems. This other brand of heater also had a Honeywell gas control valve, but there have been no problems with it since it was installed almost a year ago. In that particular case, the homeowner was very upset that the water heater would not stay lit after several failed attempts by the warranty service company trying to repair it that we uninstalled the American water heater and put a new Bradford White water heater in only 11 months later. American Water Heater refused to give my plumbing supplier credit on the returned water heater. After several months of trying to get the credit issued, American Water Heaters would only agree to giving me (through my supplier) a replacement unit with the warranty prorated (so it is already nearly 2 years into the warranty). So I am left with a water heater I cannot sell because it doesn't even have a full warranty (and therefore is a parts only warranty). I am out over $400. I have switched back to Bradford White water heaters. I have several other examples of issues with other customer's water heaters. I am still currently dealing with one unit for another home owner, which keeps going out. The homeowner is being patient, but neither the customer nor I should have to deal with a water heater that was just installed 10 months ago already requiring a 3rd service call to get it to work.

Rheem Performance natural gas hot water heater installed June, 2020. May, 2021 water temperature swinging 90 - 140 degrees intermittently. July, 2021 called installer, he had me call Rheem. August, 2021, Rheem sent me the controller/gas valve device. Had my installer swap the controller, paid $150. The new controller was dead, did not work! Installer put old controller in so I would at least have hot water. Called Rheem again, they said to remove and bring back to Home Depot. Even though the problem started in less than a year they will not cover installation. So now I have to pay. Going to file with small claims court now. One more thing, plan on spending hours on hold to get to their customer support. Stay away from Rheem hot water heaters.... junk.

Sears and Kenmore, once a reputable and reliable company selling quality products such as Kenmore, are now in my opinion in cahoots with each other and have degraded to scam artists out to rip off consumers. I am now completely skeptical with their business practices. I purchased a Kenmore 50 gallon 12 year water heater from Sears last year in June 2013 for $730. My second water heater purchase from them because my last water heater lasted for 9 years and never gave me any problems so I figured why not buy from them again. The 1 year warranty expired so I called my plumber to come out and fix the issue of the thermostat shutting down due to high temperatures for some reason. (The heat dial was never changed or adjusted.) My plumber came out and said he couldn't fix it because it was an electronic thermostat that he wasn't familiar with so I called Sears to ask about the product I purchased and that my plumber couldn't fix the problem. The Sear representative said that if I were to use another outside technician that the parts would not be warranted by Kenmore. (Okay why?) So I called Kenmore to ask about their warranty on the parts and was given the runaround with the automated system which always led me back to a Sears customer service representative. It was frustrating that I couldn't speak with someone from the Kenmore manufacturer.Since time was going by, I had no other choice but to get a Sears service technician out there to fix the problem because my tenants had no hot water. Sears said that any of the parts would be warranted and replaced without charge but there would be labor costs. When the Sears technician arrived, he notified me that the thermostat needed to get replaced with a new thermostat. I asked him what kind/brand was the old thermostat and what kind/brand is the new one because I wouldn't want the same one if the last one was defective or unreliable. He then went on to tell me that he wasn't actually going to be replacing the thermostat, but resetting it and needed to flush out the system due to build up of sediment. He also suggested that this sort of maintenance should be done every year. This ended up costing me around $280 for the reset and flush.I have never had to do this in the past with my water heater appliance. Not only am I pissed that this wastes a ton of water, but I’m also upset that a product like this was even designed and made. When did I buy an oversized Brita Filter for my house that needed flushing? The technician suggested that I purchase the Sears warranty so it wouldn't cost so much in the future. I ended up succumbed to buying a warranty because I supposedly have 9.5 years left on this product.I will never purchase a Kenmore product without reading the Consumer Affairs report on it. I did some investigation and further found out that my situation wasn't a special case. There were a number of complaints from other consumers who experienced the same exact thing. I filed a complaint (#**) with Sears and I will also report this to the Federal Trade Commission as suggested from another consumer post. I feel that this was worth sharing with others in case anyone is in the market of buying a new water heater. DO NOT BUY KENMORE or SHOP AT SEARS.

On December 21, it became clear that I needed to replace our 13-year old Rheem water heater. We decided to buy one from Lowe's, 36 miles away and have a handy man install it. He installed the new Whirlpool 50 gal gas water heater with a 12-year warranty on Friday, the 22nd, but could not get it to stay lit. He called Whirlpool to troubleshoot. They said it could be one of two parts and that they would ship the parts on the Monday after Christmas. He asked who would install and they recommended a local plumber. He called that plumber but they indicated they did not do Whirlpool warranty work and would have to charge. On Monday, I called Whirlpool and was assured the parts would be shipped that day for overnight delivery. I confronted them about the local plumber not doing their warranty work so they set up an appointment with a company called A&E for Wednesday morning. On Tuesday morning, I called Whirlpool to get the tracking number on the parts and was told that they did not get shipped on Monday as promised but would be shipped that day, arriving by the end of the day Wednesday, too late for the appointment for installation.By Tuesday night, my wife got on this site and was appalled to read the numerous identical complaints. I decided that Wednesday morning that I would hire a plumber to remove the Whirlpool and install another so we would not have a lifetime of problems from Whirlpool. The plumber installed a different water heater. It started right up and we have had no problems since. I got an R or RA number from Whirlpool which I think they only gave me because the parts had not arrived on time and I returned the piece of ** to Lowe's for a refund. Lowe's has a seven-day return policy of these.

I have RUUD tankless water heater (Model # RUTGH-950VN). On June 25th, 2016, it started leaking continuously. Since customer service was closed for that day (8:30 PM), I called the customer service on the following day! As soon as I told them that the water heater is leaking, they told me to send them the photos of the water heater before any further assistance. Once they received the photos they told me that I have to take the water heater to the dealer, from where I bought it. Since it was under warranty, I'll get a new one from the dealer. On June 27th, my plumber took it to the dealer. Since that model was not in stock, the dealer told me that it will arrive on July 1st, 2016.But on July 1st I came to know that the tankless water heater will only be shipped on 10th July (!!), and the dealer will receive it on July14th, 2016. So I contacted the Rheem customer service to complain. They (a male) told me that they can't do anything about shipping. It is out of their control. I had not hot water for all these days. I waited one more week and again contacted the Rheem customer service on July 6th, 2016. This time a new representative (female) told me that it is unacceptable that I am waiting for the water heater for so long. She told me that the required model is in stock. Since we were expecting the heater by July 14th, there is no point in shipping one more heater directly to the customer. Resigned, I decided to wait for one more week (thankfully it is summer). But July 14th came and went. Still no water heater at the dealer!! So I decided to contact THE CUSTOMER SERVICE again. This time lady told me that they never take care of the shipping and they can't if the heater has shipped from warehouse. I would never buy Rheem water heater again. Meanwhile I am still waiting for the new water heater from Rheem. I still don't have hot water at home and I have three small kids.

I had a call from my tenant on Friday morning saying the hot water heater was not functioning correctly. I had my handyman go and check it out. He was not able to get the heater to function correctly. I called the company and asked for a warranty dealer who could handle the problem. I was given the name for Reliable Plumbing in Hidden Valley Lake, California. I called and I did receive a call back from the plumber on same day about 5pm. I made several more calls and did not receive any call back of follow up over the week the plumbing bill exceeded the cost of replacement of the unit. I am not at all happy.

Long story short, we replaced a very old Whirlpool water heater with a new one a couple of years ago... We have had nothing but trouble. First, pilot light wouldn't stay lit. Found out that it was defective.... Whirlpool DID offer a "no cost" conversion kit. Had to pay shipping and installation costs. Have had the plumber out four more times to try to ANYTHING to keep it lit.... No luck. He even spoke to a Whirlpool tech on the phone and followed his advice. I have filed an online complaint with Whirlpool and the site stated that I would hear back within three working days. Guess what.... no reply. I have four other Whirlpool appliances that I love, BUT as they wear out, I will NOT consider Whirlpool.

The Ecosmart Water Heater has been reliable, durable, environment-friendly, and not as expensive as others. It works great especially in the winter and we don't have to worry about water heating in our house. We have no issues with it even though it has been with us for more than 4 years. Customer service has been friendly and very helpful when we called to follow up about some things after we bought the heater.

This is about my model FG 50 gallon water heater. Sure enough, 2 months after the limited 6-year warranty expired, the thermal coupler went out. I tried to call the 800 number supplied by American, absolutely no response at all! Due to the non-industry standard of tightening to the left American uses on the thermal coupling, I was unable to find a replacement thermal coupling. Thank goodness, I ran across these complaints and was able to purchase the repair kit at Lowe's.I'm involved in the construction business and will make it a point to share with others my complete disappointment with American water heaters. Not even the professional courtesy to answer the phone or return a phone call. Done with American! I hope the lawyers get a hold of American in a class action lawsuit and put them out of business.
