Can I do furnance maintenance myself
Posted On: January 17, 2022

Regular maintenance should be performed at least once a year to keep your furnace running smoothly. By maintaining your furnace, you're not only keeping your house comfortable in the warmer and colder seasons, but you can also save money by catching any problems early on.

There are a few things you can do on your own to maintain your furnace. But, if you come across any issues, do not try and repair them yourself. It's always best to call in a professional before attempting any repairs.

Before any maintenance, the first thing you must do is turn off the furnace. You can do this by locating the power and fuel supply buttons and shutting them down.

Remove any corrosion: The combustion chamber can leave soot and corrosion over time. To remove this, locate the combustion chamber. But before you start, make sure to wear gloves and a mask for your protection. Then begin to scrape away any debris build-up with a wire brush. Once everything is scraped off, use a vacuum to suck up the debris. When you are done, replace the cover.

Check for leaks: Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odorless gas that a carbon monoxide detector can only detect. That's why it's crucial to inspect your furnace for any holes that could cause the gas to leak out. If you find any, contact a furnace specialist right away.

Change the filter: One of the more manageable maintenance tasks is replacing the furnace filter. A furnace filter helps keep dirt and debris from entering the furnace and the air in your home. It should be changed every 90 days or less depending on how often it's on or if there are pets in the house. A dirty filter will cause the furnace to slow down or stop working altogether.

Inspect ductwork: While maintaining your furnace, look at the ductwork surrounding it. Check for leaks and other wear and tear.

By correctly maintaining your furnace, you prolong its lifespan and keep your family safe and comfortable. But if you come across any issues that you cannot fix yourself or are not comfortable performing some of the maintenance tasks, it's important to contact an HVAC specialist right away.

They can arrange a time to come over to your home and assist you with any of your furnace and air conditioner needs.
