Patio Heater Troubleshooting
Here are some sure signs that your patio heater isnâ€t working properly:
• The heater wonâ€t start;
• A gas patio heater wonâ€t start with the ignition switch, but can be lit with a match or lighter;
• The heater stops working after a few minutes;
• Reduced heat output and/or flame production.
The propane igniter wonâ€t fire up the heater
Many gas patio heaters are equipped with a spark igniter (a.k.a. sparker), a small electrode that ignites the pilot light to get things started. Over time, spark igniters fail. If you can successfully start the heater with a match or lighter, the igniter is probably the problem.
To test the spark igniter, use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the screen around the main burner (a.k.a. emitter screen). This will expose the ignition assembly, which consists of the spark igniter, pilot tube, and thermocouple. Hold down the ignition switch to visually inspect for a spark. If no spark is detected, you may need to replace the igniter
To replace the spark igniter, note that it is usually secured to the ignition assembly by a single retainer nut that can be removed with a wrench. On the other end, itâ€s usually linked to the ignition switch wiring with a push-in connector that can be easily pulled out by hand. Once you remove the old spark igniter, simply reverse the process to install the new one. You can purchase a universal igniter compatible with all patio heaters, or one designed for your heaterâ€s specific brand.
Low Gas Level
As you know, the patio heater runs on gas as its fuel. Just like many other gas-driven things, patio heaters wonâ€t work if the gas level is low or empty. So, whenever you find a problem with the patio heater (especially when it stops working), the first thing you might look up to is the gas level.
To find the gas level indicator, you have to look at the base of the heater and take out the gas cylinder. Usually, a cylinder that is full or even half full weighs quite heavy.
In case you feel the weight of the cylinder is very low, your patio heater might need a gas refill. Even if a small amount of gasoline is remaining, you need to refill that anyway. As a matter of fact, a minimum amount of gas is always required to keep the negative pressure up and drive the gas burner.
The Gas Regulator is Turned â€Offâ€
There is a gas regulator in your patio heater which has the duty of connecting the gas tank and the gas pipe. This process allows the gas to flow up to the gas burner.
If you turn the regulator off, the patio heater will stop working altogether. If this happens, check out the flip switch on the gas regulator. Itâ€s located on the top of the cylinder. If itâ€s switched towards the â€Off†position, make sure that you turn it back to â€Onâ€.
Blocked Gas Pipe
The gas pipe is the main gateway from the gasoline cylinder to the gas burner. If it gets blocked, the gas flow will hinder and as a direct impact, the patio heater wonâ€t work effectively.
To check that out, remove the gas pipe from the regulator and also detach the other end of the pipe from the gas inlet.
Now, blow some air with an air blower or air compressor and make sure that there is no more blockage in the path of the pipe. Once done, put it back into its position over again.
Unclean Gas Burner
The next thing on the podium is the gas burner itself. In fact, itâ€s one of the most occupied parts of the entire patio heater setup. So, there is a good chance that it might get into trouble over regular use.
To check that out, disassemble the burner and check for any kind of blockage. Also, another thing to check is the burner aperture. If you donâ€t set it correctly, that might also cause problems with the patio heater.
Once done with the basic checking of the burner, check out the small chamber of the burner where gas and air are mixed up. There can be some sort of build-up dirt on that chamber. And if you notice some, make sure to clean it properly.

This heater is perfect for the winter months. On low, itâ€s perfect for those of us who are always cold. In high, it great for sitting outdoors even on a cold day.
Great product for the price. Assembly was not difficult and I like the fact that it has wheels and can be moved easily to where it is needed.
Wonderful product, assembly was not as difficult as I feared. Very easy to light, gives of great heat. I had to give my last tower away because it didn't give off enough heat, this one is terrific.
It was exactly what we needed we use it for cool evenings
This is a really great outdoor heater, for its value. It does its job to warm up the nearby area. It was extremely easy to set up, the instructions were simple and easy to follow. Overall, I'm really happy with the heater!
