I bought this house that had two XR14 4-1/2 ton Trane Split heat pumps that were installed in 2010. The first major issue was April 2017. The coil in the air handler corroded from dissimilar metal corrosion. $3000 later for a Trane Parent American Standard Air Handler. July 2017 same thing happened. The repair guy put in $400 worth of super seal to get us through so they would not have to replace the other air handler in the attic. Nov 2017 it died. $6500 for an American Standard split Heat pump replacement. Jan 2018 the original Trane Condensing unit GE ECM condensing fan motor failed is been warm so researching why Trane would use a variable speed motor in an application where the whole unit is a single speed and the condensing fan runs at single speed.The main difference (Wholesale $600) vs a $150 + $10 capacitor connected to your T1 & T2 terminals. My AC guy said that the won't get a computer code when the fan fails again. I'm like DUHHHH! The compressor was running and the fan stopped. That's how I know it failed. Why would I need a computer to tell me the P.O.S. TRANE unit has failed. I am not expecting much better out of the American Standard. I am sure they are all made in the same place with different labels slapped on them. I know some of the cheaper brands do the same thing from a rental property where my 12 SEER unit ran for over 20 years. Doesn't Take much to stop a Trane but it sure takes an act of God to get the parts for them.

On May 23, 2016 I had a Trane 3 Ton, 16 SEER Condenser & Air Handler installed at my residence. This system uses R410a. On July 25, 2016 the units were no longer cooling, so I went outside to see what was happening. When I looked into the condenser unit I saw that the top of the compressor was cherry red so I disconnected power and called the installer. He came the next day and put some oil in the lines stating it must be a bad TXV valve. So I asked him to get a new one and he said that would not be necessary the oil "did the job". It ran for the remainder of the summer.On Aug 15th 2017 the compressor started banging, going on and off, and water was coming out of the emergency drip pan PVC line. So again, I called the installer and he said given what I said happened he will order new parts; compressor and TXV. WELL it is 4 weeks now and still no parts. Call the 800 number you say? I did 5 times, I have a reference number. I know them by first name. Their answer; "We understand you are upset." They can't get the parts, WILL NOT replace the units and will not give me my purchase price back. So what's a person to do? NEVER buy a TRANE - they continue to field defective units full well knowing they will break down in less than a year. And from I have read in this column, I am not that confident these replacement parts, should they ever arrive, are not going to be a permanent solution. It important to remember this system failed in less than 2 months of operation.

I replaced my 15 yr old HVAC unit with a Rheem about 3 years ago. Since then, I've had the fan unit outside replaced in yr 2 as it was unbalanced. Not from misuse and not from damage. That leaves quality. Now in yr 3 I have a blower unit that is acting up and goes into alarm so frequently we'll turn the system off at night as there is no way to suppress the alarm. The tech said that the control unit in the motor senses hesitation in the motor and throws the alarm. When the blower doesn't start a second alarm is thrown for the main limit switch. A061F and T022F are the codes shown on the EcoNet t-stat display. The system is still under warranty but I'll end up paying over $300 in labor to replace another major component due to another quality issue. My old system wore out but never had issues like this. I would advise anyone NOT to buy a Rheem. Hope their QA people read this.

Build our house 4 years ago. Our builder used at the time Rheem AC units, needless to say he has wised up since then. Just days after moving into a brand new house with brand new Ac in June, our unit would not work. Repair #1. Couple more repairs after that. Have had several repairs within the last 4 years also. This year has been by far the worst!!! I have had 7 repairs so far this summer season and am currently today October 23, waiting for yet another part to be replaced. Not say same part each time either. Multiple parts have been replaced each summer for the past 4 years. Alternative, replace unit. Really after spending $360,000 to build house. Parts are always on back order with Rheem, the parts you get from them seem to fail quickly and multiple times, and when the repairman has to make multiple calls to even get the parts department from Rheem to call him, there's a problem. Multiple repair men licensed in HVAC have told us and neighbors that Rheem units are crap and to stay away. Rheem your products are absolute crap, and your parts dept and service are even worse!!

We purchased (2) 25 Ton Daikin HVAC Units. Goodman Distributors in Philadelphia sold them to our contractor / we bought them from the contractor. Both units arrived on July 11, 2017. 1 of the units worked for a few days. It is now over 40 days and still no sign of getting replacement parts for the unit. The management at Goodman Distributors is absolutely horrible. I cannot express how angry I am at the lack of customer service & no care or desire to fix the unit. Goodman is a company owned by Daikin (manufacturer). They actually told me it's the contractor's problem - not theirs. Daikin built the unit / Goodman sold the unit - they then wash their hands off it - let me be clear - it work for only a few DAYS! $15,000 for 1 unit. I was instructed to call Customer Care - again - said "too bad nothing they can do - call the contractor." This company and the mother company are Dirty People. I made the mistake of agreeing to purchase Daikin units. Be careful if you decide to go with a Goodman Brand - they do not stand behind their equipment. In the event of a bad part (this happens) they will make your life miserable. What they should do is say "we are sorry - we will get this resolved immediately." 40+ days and counting - you be the judge!

Trane XB14 Weathertron. I purchased a brand new Trane 3T-15 Seer Air Conditioning/Heat Pump Unit from a reputable company who recommended this unit and completed the install May 2011. I've been with this A/C company since I moved to Florida 18 years ago, so I trusted their recommendation. I was told Trane was the top of the line and worth paying more to have the best, peace of mind, 10 year warranty if registered within 60 days, etc. It's been nothing but a "costly" nightmare once the 5 year mark was reached and the 10 year warranty ended up NOT being what was sold to me. Even though the company has been good about some of the items that were supposed to be 10 years, they have haggled with me and TRANE over what is actually covered on the warranty and the period of time. CRAZY! CRAZY!With this major purchase, you would expect to get more than 5 years out of a system without spending additional major $$$. The following are my repairs/replacements since May 2016 to date: EFC control board, capacitor, condenser coil (plus R410 to replace what was lost), another trip to fix a R410 leak as a result of when the condenser coil was replaced, replaced entire circuit board, new blower relay, and thermometer all within a 3 year period. Keep in mind, that not only do you pay for labor to install the warranted item, each visit is a service/diagnostics fee.Today, my system runs constantly causing very high energy bills because the A/C simply can't keep up with the outside temps -- called for service and after diagnosing the units for 1.5 hours, they tell me they can't find anything wrong. The AC Guy told me that they just don't make Trane Units like they used to!! I'm very disappointed in Trane products, I wish I would have read these reviews before taking the recommendation of a company I trust, and certainly don't recommend purchasing a TRANE to anyone. Very Disappointed!

This is one of the brands from INTERNATIONAL COMFORT PRODUCTS which is a part of UNITED TECHNOLOGIES CORP. The PERFORMANCE 14 (N4A5) units are basic air conditioners with a durable powder coat finish but they use a wire coil guard to protect the condenser coil fins which does not actually do much to protect them. The units have a 14 SEER efficiency to meet all of the regional standards but their guarantee is not very good when compared to other brands. The SOFTSOUND DELUXE 19 (CCA9) is a premium unit with a variable speed fan motor, swept wing fan blade, and compressor blanket for quiet operation. They have a good guarantee but it is only average when compared to other brands. The units are sold in the USA and Canada but only through their approved dealer network. comfortmaker.com
