Product Reviews:

I purchased a rental home with a Whirlpool hot water heater. In the home inspection, it was deemed to be in good working order. The first day the tenant moved in, I received 3 service calls for no hot water. My contractor told me I needed to replace the start up assembly and it needed to be ordered from Whirlpool directly, as it is not available in stores. When I contacted Whirlpool Customer Service, the operator, Stacey, was rude and unhelpful. She told me that the warranty was void because I was not the original owner, even though it does not state that the warranty is not transferable. She also told me she could not help me order a replacement part without the item number.

After going on internet and diagnosing the thermocouple on my American Water Heater as bad by testing the thermocouple with a meter, I then tried to replace the LEFT-THREADED thermocouple. I could not find the right one, so again I go on the internet and found that AWH used left-threaded thermocouple for three years before a class-action lawsuit stopped the practice. Until I went on the internet and found this information, I was unaware of it and had not received notification about the replacement kit. The website for AWH did have a phone number and they were very helpful when I called. Since the water heater was still under its 12-year warranty, they did supply the conversion kit for free; however, two-day delivery service did require my forking over $32.00 for shipping and handling, which I felt they should have paid since it was the design defect of the piece that caused a problem and was supposed to have been replaced as part of the lawsuit.Fortunately, I am rather handy at doing things myself, or else getting a plumber or gas technician to do the work for me would cost around $100.00, for which the company of course doesn't offer to pick up the bill. Hopefully when the parts arrive, it will prove to be as easy as the internet seems to make it sound to replace it, and I will have hot water again! If not, I will post again and let you know how displeased I am, and if the company resolved my problem with having to pay to have a plumber or gas technician to do the conversion for me.

I bought a water heater three years ago. Now, for no reason, the burner assembly has gone bad. I cannot imagine how cheaply these must be made to fail so quickly. When I called to order parts, the representative interrogated me about the location of the heater and then refused to send parts due to a location. It seems that this company make low quality products and then finds excuses to not honor warranties. Avoid!

The AO Smith water heater that came with the house lasted 18 years before it needed to be replaced. I got a Bradford White that failed in just 18 months and had it replaced under warranty. After only a year we had to put in a new anode in the warranty replacement water heater. 12 months later that water heater ruptured. No warranty for a water heater replaced under warranty. I guarantee that I won't be getting a third Bradford White.

Purchased water heater in 2005 with a lifetime warranty. We had our first problem May 30, 2013. Water would not heat above lukewarm. Called Whirlpool. Our plumber and Whirlpool determined that the temp sensor was defective. Plumber took it off and it appeared it had shorted out as the wires were black and plastic coating had slightly melted in one spot. We had replacement part in 24 hours. Licensed Plumber did repair (2 hours @ $75/hr = $150). Second problem occurred October 23, 2013. Not even 5 months later! No hot water. Hit reset button, turned temp up. No change. The diagnostic light on water heater indicated it was the same problem as before. Called Whirlpool. They sent out repair part which arrived in 24 hours. Licensed Plumber repaired (1.5 hours @ $75/hour = $112.50).I took a picture of the melted plastic caps where the wires screw into, of the housing around the wires, of the melted, charcoal crispy black of the Junction Box in the area that was directly above and covered the wires and sensor panel. It was much worse than last time. Plumber said that the part that screwed into the plastic cap had to be pried out and it broke off. You could see that this might be the spot where the problem started. We feel fortunate that we didn't have an electrical fire start from this problem. Something isn't right. Within less than 5 months, we have spent $262.50 to repair a water heater that has a "lifetime warranty." I'd like to give this 0 stars. Whirlpool owes us $262.50 and it might be more before this is all said and done.

Bought heater, failed within 10 days. No contractor in this area would touch it. Home Depot repair service would not help. Rheem said to check the gas supply. Was done by professional Rheem. Offered to pay for another test which no one in this area does. Going on 15 days no hot.

I have the same pilot light problems as everybody else. I pulled the burner unit out, and cleaned, and blew everything out, and took a wire brush to the openings on the floor of the unit. I called customer service, and was asked about ventilation. I didn't mention that the heater still didn't work, even when the door to the tin water heater was removed, so venting is not the likely culprit. She authorized a repair that will likely do nothing from the comments I see.The real problem with their customer service, is the apparent stupidity of the computer system. She asked me for the model and ID number. I had to cut through the extra insulation blanked on the tank to get it. However, when I gave it to her, she then asked me if I was ** and if I live at **. If this information was already in the computer, why couldn't there be a search by my name and address, to get the model and serial number. Obviously, I had registered the water heater in the past. Isn't being able to get this information the reason to register in the first place? Now, I have to replace the extra insulation, all because of a stupid inability to create the necessary searches in their customer database. Yes, I could have written the numbers down, but why have the customer registration at all, if it isn't to be used for anything, other than data mining of the customer base.

I purchased the American water heater about 3 years ago. The water heater doesn't work well in probably in a year. I took it to the Miami office in Hialeah. They fixed and then after a year started to get really hot then going cold. I called them again and they said I have to bring it back. They will charge for parts and services. I'm really disappointed about this decision I made. It was the worst to change my regular water heater for this. What I'm going to do now? It's winter and I have to have a cold shower. If I take it back probably I will need around a $100.00 not including the plumbing service.

Yesterday we contacted Rheem regarding one of their hot water tanks that was only installed in April 2015, due to a loud bang then started leaking from the bottom. They authorized a replacement since was way under the Warranty Period. So far we were happy with the outcome. It wasn't UNTIL we took the defective tank back to Home Depot where it was originally purchased. First of all, they had no clue as to what they were doing, couldn't find our receipt even though was purchased with their CC and finally did NOT even do an even exchange. They charged us the difference from what was paid in April 2015 and what the price of the tank is NOW. Their reasoning behind this is the tank that was purchased in 2015 is NO LONGER manufactured so we had to get the one compatible to it. FIRST off, is it my fault the Hot Water Tank which was less than a year old went! SECONDLY, again is it my fault the original tank is NO LONGER manufactured! We proceeded to contact Rheem today regarding this issue, at which time they advised they have NO control how Home Depot processes Rheem's defective merchandise/warranties or their prices. I was shocked and told the Customer Service Rep so. How can a company offer a warranty and NOT FULLY honor it. This should have been an even exchange regardless. I could understand if we wanted to upgrade or purchase larger. This was the only tank that was available.

I purchased the water heater from my local ACE hardware on 8/2007 (model 606, model # 640GORT) and the second water tank replacement on 3/2009. I noticed the pilot was going out and also heat scorch marks on the outside of tank. After repeated pilot lightings, it wouldn't light. So I decided to remove the bottom panel and peaked inside the burner area. To my surprise, the burner was completely buried in rust chips! Enough rust chips to almost fill a 5 pound bag of sugar; therefore, knocking out any means of burner operation. I called ACE and they were very helpful and replaced the tank the next day after showing the manager its condition. Now it is 12/2011 and I have the same problem, rust chips dropping off onto the burner. This time I vacuumed out the burner area so I can get the burner running again, but only to find a few weeks later rust chips accumulating again. The tank has a 6-year warranty. This product has defects and I want to be compensated to buy different brand. Buyer, beware of this unit. I will never buy a Reliance tank again.
