I am having problems with my Whirlpool Water Heater. The pilot light goes off often and now it won't stay lit at all. I checked the thermocouple and measured the voltage, it is 19+ mV. So according to the manual, the gas valve/thermostat must have gone bad. I called the company and they gave me a name of the contractor but asked me to pay for the labor cost. This is a 50 gallon, 12-year rated heater bought from Lows in 2008. The heater's model number is BFG1J5040T3NOV. This thing has some serious quality issues.

The defect is in the Gas Control and Thermal Coupling, per my licensed plumber. GE tells me my water heater is still under warranty; therefore, I would like an authorization code to have it replaced by Home Depot where it was originally purchased. Home Depot tells me I need GE to give me the authorization code. BTW, your CS rep was very helpful. She is sending both items to me, but I prefer to have a replacement for the cost my plumber will charge to install parts in a questionable product. Thank you.

We purchased a Whirlpool water heater at Lowes for $1100.00. Four years later it isn't working. There are no parts to fix it available at any store in Dallas, TX. We had to call the company. They made us pay the overnight shipping fee for the part. Then the part didn't show up. When we called to find out why isn't the part at my house, they said they found out FedEx doesn't deliver on Saturdays. No one ever called to notify us of this, instead the response was that they would use it as a "coaching" lesson for not notify the customer. We have now been without hot water in the middle of winter for 5 days. We have no idea when the part will arrive and if it will even fix my defective water heater. We will never buy another Whirlpool product and I strongly encourage anyone who reads this to not buy Whirlpool. They don't stand by their product and have horrible customer service.

Whirlpool Water Heater bought May 2011: Water heater not heating. I called Whirlpool and they stated the equipment is under warranty but not the labor; $137.50 for 1st hour of service. Troubleshooting is a joke. It just doesn't heat. Waiting on the 3 plumbers to call me back. They are busy. Water heater went out Sat morning and Whirlpool doesn't open until Monday. It's Monday at 5pm and I'm still waiting on a call back.

The water heater does what it is supposed to do. I had never installed a water heater before but it was relatively easy for what most pay people to do. The ignition electrodes had fallen off in shipping so it was frustrating to find it didn't work for a few minutes. I eventually got it all sorted. My only gripe with the unit itself is that the water fluctuates temperature when it powers down while still providing hot water. I will probably figure it out, but the water heater does it's job otherwise. I have tested it with two showers, dishwasher and clothes washer going at the same time. I chose this model for the price mostly, so it's what I expected. If I had the choice, I would never go back to a tank again but I would get a better water heater so the temperature stays within a few degrees.

The water heater works great. It has good hot water and good pressure. I am happy with it. It is a good brand. The water heater was in my home when I bought it, and I would buy another one if I had to replace the old one. I would suggest it to friends and family if they needed one.

I bought Rheem water heater and just after the warranty the tank started to leak. Had throw out to the garbage. Never buy again. Very unreliable product. I had to repair the entire floor due to the flood caused because of this water heater.

I wanted a new hot water heater as the original 27 year old unit was starting to go, so my husband went to the local Lowe's and picked up a Whirlpool 40 gallon electric heater. First one didn't work and neither did the second one. We tried to follow all the recommendations by the help desk, nothing. We did research and found that 95% of a batch of 40 and 50 gallon shipped out had defective heating elements in them.

I have the same problem as all the other plaintiffs . The pilot keeps going out and I only had the heater for 4 months customer service is no help. They are not allowing me to return the product. They rather send parts to try and repair the heater. I feel that the product should be recalled and what about the lemon law policy.

40-gal gas water heater - I own several rental properties and unfortunately put Whirlpool water heaters in them when the old ones go. It is because they are at Lowe's and they are cheap. Today, another call came in from a tenant with no hot water. I called customer service and they determined I received the repair kit from an original design defect from back in the middle 2000's. Now 3 years later, it goes out again. Because I have already received the conversion kit taking thermal couple threading from LH to RH, I needed another part number to repair for a grand total of $160! The same part before the conversion kit was $60. I will never buy another Lowe's/Whirlpool water heater for as long as I live. I own a hundred rentals and Whirlpool will never again see another cent for the junk water heaters.
