If you look at Consumer Reports, EVERY SINGLE WATER HEATER regardless of company or brand is junk and easily breaks. So how you do buy a water heater? Do without a water heater? Boil water instead? Also consider many THOUSANDS of these are sold without problem, so occasionally there is a bad apple. Luck of the draw. I just got a AO Smith but I had one before that lasted for years. I just converted to gas so who knows. Yes I'm nervous... but Rheem also had its share of complaints so it's all luck of the draw. I won't be getting tankless -- the more parts and components, the more can break. I do agree you should get one with the longest warranty possible.

I purchased a brand new Rheem natural gas tank water heater in October of 2020 and last week we lost hot water. I called Rheem customer service on Thursday and they said we need a new gas valve, it'll be delivered in two business days. We go all weekend with no hot water, showering at work and the gym. Monday rolls around and still no part. I call again yesterday and there is no order placed under my name!!! After we get the order squared away I ask if someone is going to come and install this new part and they told me a service contract we had expired in Sept. 2021. I told them since they screwed us and didn't place our order the first time they should come install this for us anyways and they said THEY CAN'T. It's now the next day, I haven't gotten an email that the part has shipped and there's no tracking number. I call once again and they said yup, it hasn't shipped yet and left me hanging. WE ARE GOING ON ONE WEEK OF NO HOT WATER. I'm doing you a favor, do not buy Rheem! They're so useless and unhelpful and don't care.

Purchased a Rheem Hot Water through Home Depot. Heater's improper wiring caused popping and arcing once turned on. Paid certified electrician ($50) to repair heater's electrical harness. Reported problem to Rheem who requested service invoice, electrician's license number, phone number, serial number, model number, and proof of service payment. Twice I sent Rheem requested information. Twice Rheem requested the same information. To date, Rheem has not reimbursed me for service and has been unwilling to process claim. Apparently, customer service after a purchase is not a company value.

I purchased the American Water Heater Proline in 2005. In 2008, the igniter/thermocouple went out. It took 4 days to get a warranty replacement unit. It was free, but there's cost to put in, in a 3 year old unit. I was told there was a factory defect and this kit would fix it. Three years later (warranty about to expire), the "kit" did the same thing. Another 4 days, I was without water while waiting for another kit. Do not buy their water heaters. They suck! Now I have to pay another $200 for a plumber to fix it. That means I have to use cold water for days. I have 4 properties. I had water heaters all my life. I never had such a bad experience. They dare put an American Flag on it and tout how well made it is. It is no wonder China is taking over. Stay away from this company!

I completely forgot that I wrote a review on our Whirlpool hot water heater model FG1H5040T3 Nov in 2010 until I received an email telling me how many people read my post. Surprise, Surprise guess what we are having problems with again. You know how nice it is to have hot water anytime you need or want it. Well, not at my house. The hot water heater worked for about a year (I'm probably being nice with the time here). Here's our problem now, once the water heats up the pilot goes out. It will not stay on. I've noticed that if it's full the pilot light will not come on, so we have to run some water to be able to light it. Well I called customer service, a waste of time. The guy told me that my heater's warranty expired last year and his suggestion is to go buy another heater. REALLY! All I wanted to do was order a part for it. He did send me an article with suggestion of things to check. Sorry, we already did everything in the article, another waste of time. It seems we are not the only ones (model #) with problems with Whirlpool. Whirlpool used to make good products but it's not anymore. I will NEVER buy another Whirlpool product again.

Bought and installed this water heater on a Friday night, by Sunday night the gas valve was not working. I tried everything, troubleshooted and called the help number. The man I spoke to was not helpful at all. He asked me questions that didn’t apply to my problem. Also implied I wasn’t smart enough to know the gas had to be turned on. I am very disappointed in a product that costs hundreds of dollars that doesn’t even last 2 days.

My water heater failed and after contacting Rheem tech support they agreed that the unit needed needed to be replaced. No one in my region [including Rheem] had any replacements so Rheem told me to purchase one from Home Depot, which I did. After months of emails, submitting numerous copies of documents and hours of phone calls I received a check for 1/2 of the replacement unit value. Rheem informed me that the unit wasn't worth what I paid for it. My cost would have been the same from Rheem, Home Depot or a Rheem authorized dealer. Rheem's lifetime warranty is a lie. It's a great water heater, but you would be better served buying a decent quality unit from another manufacturer. If I had known that they weren't going to honor the warranty I would've bought a different brand.

They will keep stalling on replacing your water heater until you give up and buy a new one because you need hot water. 12-year warranty tank, only 4 years old. Already had to replace the thermocouple 2 years ago. Second failure now only lets it give hot water for 1-2 minutes and it's out. Since this was not my first bad experience with a Rheem heater customer support, I just went straight to a plumber. They told me the tank needs to be replaced. OK, next day I call support, they want me to check a couple things and get back to them, fair enough. Call back 2 days later, they have no record I ever called so we start the entire process again, and they decide to send me a new gas control valve even though the first person I talked to said that didn't fit the symptoms. 2 days later I get it, and install it. Still broken, call back again, by now it's been a week without any hot water, and everyone in the house is pissed at me. They want me to run a water temperature test AGAIN for a third time, even though I'm already well aware the water gets hot... it just runs out in about 2 minutes. They want to send me another gas control valve, even though I just installed a new one they sent me that day. Which I wouldn't get until Tuesday since it's a Saturday. Refuse to allow me to trade it in for a new one, and the supervisor tells me it's clearly a plumbing issue since the gas control valve was replaced and I checked the dip tube and it's not cracked or broken. He tells me just like a water heater, parts can fail in plumbing. My copper pipes can fail somehow causing hot water to run out quick? With zero plumbing changes? Yeah, OK, they clearly are just coming up with any excuse possible to not give me a working water heater. At this point I need hot water, so I give up and go buy a Whirlpool. Hey, I have all the hot water I want now, turns out my copper pipes didn't break in a fashion that sucks the hot water up. Shocker, it was the water heater. $750 down the drain on a new water heater because their support refuses to actually help.

I purchased a 40 gallon water heater at Lowe's and installed about 3 years ago. A couple of weeks ago, it got an upper sensor failure code on the gas valve. It would heat by resetting (turning valve off, waiting a minute and then lighting) but after a few minutes, it would fail again. I called the customer service and they mailed out a new upper sensor. When it came a few days later (I paid for shipping), I installed it but the same failure code. Again, the only heat I could get was by resetting the valve several times before a shower. I called customer service again, told them what I did and they said, "Oh, the problem is the gas valve then." So they mailed out a new gas valve unit. It then came a few days later and I installed it according to the enclosed directions to the letter. Still got the failure code and still had to keep resetting it to get any warm water before a shower.I called customer service again, told them what I did and he said, "Well, did you flush the water heater with apple cider vinegar before you installed the new gas valve?" I said, "No, it wasn't in the enclosed directions to do so." He said, "You should have done that and it would have worked. I will send out a new gas valve." At this point, I blew up. Two weeks with no reliable hot water. I told him I want a new water heater and he refused. I asked to speak to his superior. He said no. Don't ever get a Whirlpool product. Some other crappy company builds these turds.

I bought a house a few years ago with a Reliance water heater that had been installed in 2005. Just a few days ago, it quit. I replaced the thermocouple (to the tune of $125, parts and install) and it stayed lit once. Needless to say, I am replacing this un-Reliance water heater today with another brand, especially after reading these posts!
