We built a new house in 2013. Our Rheem 50 gallon water heater is only 8 years old but of course, this happens right after the warranty is expired. We finished our basement about a year ago. Thanks to this water heater failing, we now have to replace not just the water heater, but all of our beautiful new hardwood flooring, the carpet in the bedroom and some of the drywall. Original water heater = $1,000. New water heater = $1,000. Homeowners insurance deductible = $1,000. Time off from work to remove everything from the basement to pull up the flooring = $840. Total cost of owning this thing = $3,840. Steer clear, folks.

I purchased a new 12-year water heater in December 2009 from Home Depot. Less than two years later (21 Aug 11), the water heater broke down, the pilot light failed to light and there was no hot water. I called GE/Rheem service line and instructions were given to re-light the pilot. I got it going for only five minutes before shutting off again. Then, I called Pacific Gas and Electric Company on the next day, 22 Aug 11, for unbiased diagnostic check. PG&E came on 23 Aug 11 and determined that the water heater was properly installed, the air vents were clear and no obstructions but, again, the pilot light failed to sustain or remain lit for more than six minutes. I called GE/Rheem service line and described the sequence of events. The phone technician quickly stated that she would send a "gas valve control" which would "take care of the problem." I asked if there were problems with these heaters but I did not get a clear answer. She stated that she would send out the part via FedEx to arrive the next day between 10-12 noon. It's already 5:00 p.m. but there is still no part and it is too late now to find a plumber to come install. Meanwhile, it has been four days without hot water. I checked the Internet and found an incredible amount of complaints regarding the specific product of GE water heaters and many of them were purchased from Home Depot.

I have had too many problems with the thermocouple beginning about two years after I purchased the water heater in 2003. Whirlpool keeps replacing the thermocouple, but I have to pay for the plumber to come out and repair the unit. This runs me about $180 each time. The thermocouple has burned out three times since September of this year. The plumber didn't charge me anything the second time it went out. But it went out for the 3rd time today and he recommended that I replace the unit. Of course, it is out of warranty and Whirlpool was happy to tell me that I could purchase a new thermocouple at my own expense from them. I have paid for this water heater three times over with repairs. Whirlpool knows that there is a defect with the design of the water heater. There is no way that a regular consumer can get inside the water heater to clean it. I will never purchase any Whirlpool products ever! I advise anyone reading this to follow suit.

The Bradford White Gas Power Vent water heater failed without warning overnight causing extensive flooding and water damage to a finished basement. Water heater was almost 10 years old. Should be built with a safety water cut off valve that ceases water supply to water heater if incoming water rate is greater than exiting flow.

“This is my 2nd Noritz. I installed my first one back in 2004 in a previous home. Definitely the only way to go! :)”

I've had this sitting in the garage waiting for me to install it for 8 months now. Our current 50 gallon tank was only 3 years old so I wasn't in any hurry. I relocated where the heater was installed a few feet and tore down the old closet in the garage the tank was in so just for that reason going tankless is a good thing. Now I have a lot more garage space. I'm a plumber by trade but not really in the industry any longer so I had installed hundreds of tank type heaters in my life. We were always of the belief that these tankless instant type heaters were a joke. That might have been true several years ago but they've come a long way since. The install was a little tedious. If you aren't moving your location then it will be a lot easier. You will almost certainly need to upsize your gas piping though. Most tanks use 1/2" gas piping and you can't run 1/2" very far if you intend to get the 200K BTUs these units require. I only had a 10' run of 1/2" but I didn't want to take a chance so I upsized to 3/4". Other than just the labor involved the install is relatively straight forward, not much unlike a tank heater install. I could not get used to the idea of using PVC pipe for a vent but, after firing the unit for the first time I'm almost surprised it needs any vent. No heated air comes out of this thing, it's like it's 100% efficient. I fired my unit initially with only a 3 foot section of PVC stuck through the ceiling and I crawled into the attic just to gauge the temperature of the exhaust gas. Well, there was none. I assumed the unit wasn't heating but it was. 125 degree water right at the tap and virtually no hot gas exhausting out the vent. Quite impressive! And the thing is almost dead silent when it runs. Time will tell if it's as good as it started off but so far I have no regrets. The first shower I took with it last night after working all day on sure was nice, and plenty warm. I will miss my water circulation pump though, with our tank heater we were able to have instant hot water right at the faucet. The pump we have now is not usable with this tankless heater and I'm certain what options are available for that. Having to run water for a couple of minutes sort of seems like a waste to me, I guess water is cheaper than gas but still.

I purchased a gas hot water heater from Whirlpool. I have had problems with it since it was new. Whirlpool kept sending repair parts, which I installed, until the warranty expired. Now they say “Sorry Charlie, the warranty has expired.” The water heater has never been fixed. They just dragged it along until the warranty expired. Whirlpool has no complaint department or the repair place will not give it to you. They told me there would be no use for a complaint department. They would just tell the same thing the repair was telling me.

I purchased the American water heater about 3 years ago. The water heater doesn't work well in probably in a year. I took it to the Miami office in Hialeah. They fixed and then after a year started to get really hot then going cold. I called them again and they said I have to bring it back. They will charge for parts and services. I'm really disappointed about this decision I made. It was the worst to change my regular water heater for this. What I'm going to do now? It's winter and I have to have a cold shower. If I take it back probably I will need around a $100.00 not including the plumbing service.

This is the 2 Rheem 360 gallon hot water heater model G65-360-1 that has leaked in less than 5 years. The 1st one lasted under 4 years but because Rheem only offers a 4 year warranty from date of manufacture not install we had to fork out $15,000 to have another heater installed Dec 2016. Going with the same model allowed for quick replacement which when your business is closed because of lack of hot water fast is best. Now 14 months later our heater that cost more than a small car is leaking. Rheem comment although they have agreed to replace the heater not sure yet if they are paying the $2000 install fee was that they very seldom have what they call a leaker. When I told them to look up the serial number of the one the new leaker replaced the agent claimed we are not having much luck with their heaters, we would send it back and put in a John Wood but Rheem won't give us a refund. Be aware they have problems. Avoid a Rheem or any of their other products. A Wood heater will last years without problems, ask your plumber before you buy not the "experts" at the Home Improvement stores. They are going to sell you what they make the most margin on. Not what is going to be the best.
