Product Reviews:

I purchased water heater in 2008 that failed under warranty a few years later. The company agreed to replace it under warranty free of charge with the exception of labor. This newer unit is now having issues and I paid for the repair of two thermostats because it assumed the remaining warranty of the original failed unit, and no longer has a warranty. Customer service informed me that they may have been willing to offer a discount on price of repair if I would have called them before it was completed. Not available though after the repair. It is difficult to understand how the newer unit does not also have an original warranty. Now penalized twice for one failed unit and one that is also malfunctioning after a few years. I will not purchase this brand again and will be very clear about when a warranty starts and ends when I purchase a replacement.

My house came with a Bradford White gas water heater with an electric blower that has a 6 yr warranty. Yesterday the water heater broke and water went all over the basement floor and needs to be replaced. The water heater is 6 yr and 11 months old. This puts it conveniently outside the 6 year warranty. When I called the company I was told sorry, it is out of warranty they (Bradford White Corp) will not do anything. They said water heaters are designed to last 10 years+, industry standard is only 6 yr warranty, and they would do nothing about their product's failure. Additionally I was told Since it's out of warranty they (Bradford White Corp) won't do anything, but we will sell me a new water heater AT FULL PRICE. I called the plumber who was going to install the new one and told them I did not want a Bradford water heater put back in, and was told b/c of size and space issue with my house I'm stuck with getting a Bradford. This post and others I'm leaving is to warn any other soon to be water heater buyers NOT to get a Bradford White Water heater b/c they do not stand by their product, have poor customer service, and have products that conveniently break when the warranty is up. If anyone wants to contact me to discuss, you can email me at **. Beware of Bradford White products!

Had 2 - 40 gals twin water heaters in attic on 2 story house. Both eventually started leaking from the thermostats. Took both of the thermostats out of tanks and found that the plastic covering both probes had split and it is where the water came back thru the thermostat housing and leaked thru my ceiling down to the first floor. Obviously a defective water heater assembly and thermostat from Honeywell.

Update: My water heater's pilot light would not stay lit. After seeing the large number of similar complaints on this site, I contacted Whirlpool and asked whether they would cover the cost of labor in addition to the parts, which were under warranty. The representative was very understanding and agreed. The thermocoupler and gas valve were replaced a few days ago. It seems to be working fine. Additionally, a representative contacted me directly in response to my Consumer Affairs complaint, not knowing I had already gotten approval for the repair. He wanted to make sure I received the help that I needed and called to follow-up after the repair. I'm very pleased with the response.

Mind you, Whirlpool products that we have purchased in the past have been satisfactory, but gas hot water heaters, no! About four years ago we purchased a Whirlpool hot water heater that went out in a little over a year. After spending many calls and time, we found out that the HWH was on soft recall. Whirlpool credited our account, but this was to purchase another Whirlpool, which we did. We paid for installation. About 2 years later, it has gone out. Same problem. Lowes says not their problem. Whirlpool says it will pay for the part only. Plumber will cost 150-200 dollars. All the plumbers I have talked to will not repair them, then they are held responsible when it goes out! As a disabled Vet I cannot afford to throw 400-600 dollars away. And, Whirlpool tells me that if they give me an RA number to replace the HWH, it will have to be a Whirlpool from Lowes. Great! Whirlpool quarterly report looks very good. Mine doesn't look as good. What can be done about a poor working product? Or is this too big to fail? Let me know.

We had purchased a Kenmore 40 gal water heater from Sears in Aug 2013. This purchase was not needed at the time, but we figured we would keep it in the basement as an immediate replacement for our aging water heater. One year later Aug 2014 our water heater broke and I had put in the pre-purchased Kenmore. Things were fine until Dec 2014 (Christmas Weekend). That is when our heater stopped producing hot water. The blinking light code was a #4. Four beeps. Overheated! Reading up on this, I learned that generally two things cause a # 4 failure indicator... 1- If the temperature was set above Hot. Or, 2-The lime build up inside the heater was too much. Well, at only two years old, and the heat being drained of 3 gallons of water every six months. I really doubt lime build up was the issue. Secondly, the temperature was set on Hot. Not above!Long story short, this Valve/Thermostat is not easy to find for purchase for an immediate repair. I searched many stores to no avail. I checked with Sears Parts and was told they can order it for $180.00 and it would take 3-10 days to receive. Well, I kind of need a shower NOW! I went home, logged in to Sears Parts website and purchased it for $180.00 plus an expedited 2 day delivery fee of $35.00. LUCKILY, I will be able to replace it myself, but what if someone is not very mechanically inclined. Here would come a two hour plumber charge I'm sure. I find it ridiculous that after only 2 years of use, this valve would go bad. Even MORE ridiculous is the idea that many people are facing the same problem at the 2 yr mark. Somewhat ironic I feel! Almost appears as though they are designed to fail at 24 months. Be careful of Kenmore and even more careful of these Honeywell Gas Valves/Thermostats. Model # 9007890.

Purchased on 04-26, professionally installed on 04-29 into a clean, large, well-ventilated area within the garage. Has turned itself off every day since then. Flashes code 10, screen is dirty... Pull the burner and the screen is clean. Called Whirlpool. They tell me to clean it again, so I do. This goes on for weeks... I can now pull the screen and clean it with my eyes closed. I get up a half hour early every morning to complete my water heater re-lighting procedure so my family can take a warm shower!!! Whirlpool gives me a phone number to a repair company. They tell me the repair person will have parts on the truck. I wait four days, guy comes out and says, "You need a control valve.... did they send it to you?" So I had to call Whirlpool back and order the valve... three more days... Very next day after repair, the thing shuts itself off again! I call Whirlpool and they try and push me off to the repair company, saying they are now responsible for the repair, but in the same sentence the "tech" says the heater needs a burner assembly. Okay, so you know it needs a burner assembly, but you ask me to contact the repair company to come out and fix it knowing they DO NOT have the parts on the truck? Only after I change my tone and raise my voice does she offer to send the part ahead of the repair appointment! In my opinion, Whirlpool has reached the top of a list shared by other mega companies like Bank of America and Time Warner Cable... Too bad the accolade is for the worst product and customer service. DO NOT BUY Whirlpool.

Had to call a week after our water heater was installed because of a bad flammable gas sensor. The plumber said they have the part but because we're under warranty we have to wait for the warranty people to send us a part. Then the warranty guy tries telling my wife that it's a easy fix and that she can replace it. Doesn't warranty mean they cover all labor and part cost?? I feel like the the plumber is supposed to fix the problem then submit a warranty claim. Not the other way around.

The water heater is right about okay. But we have lime in our water from being south of the Potomac. So we have to change out our water heaters more than people from other states do. Even though we have the lime issue, this water heater (cross your fingers, knock on wood) has held up quite well. However, I wish it came with a filter to stop the lime from getting in the water heater to begin with. Then we wouldn't have to change them out so much.

Reliance Water Heater, Model #640DORT - This water heater is only 4 months old. The upper element went out. I called the 800 number 3 times and had to wait for a call back. By the time I finally got someone who could help me, my repairman was already at the house and fixed it. It was an upper element. This water heater has a 6-year warranty. BIG DEAL. The upper element value is only $19.00, so it isn't worth the hassle to get reimbursed with all the questions. They wanted to know how long of a shower someone took before it went out. Frankly, I'm not impressed. I have never had a water heater go out or have any elements go out in less than the warranty time. I hate to think of all the other problems we will have for the next 5-1/2 years it is supposed to be covered. They should change their name.
