Purchased and had installed a new Rheem water heater by Home Depot. The installation went well but the new heater was defective and leaked hot water from the top of the unit... I called the Rheem number listed on the side of the water heater and got a call center where I was placed on hold and then no one ever returned. The second attempt to call resulted in being transferred to a "technician" who never answered. The third attempt: I was told to dig out insulation from the top of the heater to find where it was leaking and repair it myself. I was also told to go out and buy a plug that was missing from the top of the unit. The fourth attempt: I was told to check the water pressure! It's obvious that the personnel in the Rheem call center are not trained in troubleshooting issues and they'll hang up or transfer you if they don't know the answer to resolving a warranty problem. I had to call Home Depot to get the water heater replaced.

My 50-gallon water heater leaked all over the lower floor of my home while under warranty. I spoke with Rheem and they told me because I replaced my heater with another brand heater, I violated their warranty. So if it were up to them, I would have called them instead of a plumber.

We bought our house brand new back in 2005. Up until last week we have had no issues with our hot water heater (model number: FG6150T403NOV, serial number: 0425109812). However, last week the pilot light went out. We had a plumber come out and look at the unit. He cleaned and inspected the unit. At that time he noticed that the thermocouple was a left-handed thread and that it could be the problem. However, he was able to get the heater fired up and waited about 30 minutes before leaving. When I checked on it that evening, I noticed the pilot was out again. I finally called to get a replacement part. After being charge $33.00 for expedited shipping, I found out that the part was on backorder! I spoke with Sears parts (I guess they are affiliated with American) and was told that I would receive a credit (they would not answer what kind of credit). The part was not a thermocouple but a BFG conversion kit. I started researching this converter kit and found out it was driven by a class action lawsuit (even though I had to pay $102.00 total). Further research pushed me to calling up a local plumbing company and buying a new hot water heater (a Bradford). I would rather shell out the extra for a safe, new product, than take a chance on a conversion kit that might fix the issue (Is the redesign even UL certified?)

My hot water heater was installed approx 4 years ago. A year ago I have been having problems with the module not allowing me to change the temperature of the heat, as well as the unit itself would not properly stay on when it attempted to heat the water. Then to top it all off every time I had a plumber come and attempt to fix the problem, once the hot water heater began filling the tank, it would build so much pressure, the pressure relief valve would dump water all over the place. I live on a concrete slab so my hot water heater is in a closet in the hallway. My hallway floors are now ruined and I have had to put in a claim to my homeowners ins which in turn will wind up raising my premiums. Thank god American has finally (a year later) resolved to replacing the existing hot water heater for a new one. Though, because they do not cover labor costs for the new install I much shell out $650 for the new unit!. Maybe I should sue! I pray that I will not have the same problems with the new one!. I will be installing tile flooring in the hallway so that if this happens again.....Tile floor does not warp!. DO NOT BUY THESE PRODUCTS IF YOU HAVE THE CHOICE!!!

When I moved into my house in 2012 I found an American Water Heater Company water heater, model #FG6140T403NOV in the basement. It was manufactured late 2003, installed by a plumber in 2005, and used for four years in a ONE-person household before I got to it in 2012 (no one lived there for three years). It is now mid-2013 and the pilot light has gone out. After many cold showers, some tomfoolery and a $120 plumber visit, the pilot will light but not stay lit - the plumber confirmed it's a bad thermocouple. A bad, LEFT-THREADED thermocouple. It turns out AWH used left-threaded thermocouple for three years before a class-action lawsuit stopped the practice. AWH says they contacted all registered owners under warranty and sent them a replacement kit with a thermocouple adapter. My heater obviously did not get the replacement kit. Oh, and you can't just buy a universal thermocouple for $8 and get the thermocouple adapter - you have to order an entire door manifold assembly from AWH. When you're without hot water for your shower, it puts you on edge. You want your hot water ASAP. AWH charges $34.99 for the "thermocouple retrofit kit" and $30 for next-day shipping, plus tax - about $70 and one-two days for what would have otherwise been $8 and a trip to Menard's/Home Depot. The plumber I called out and everyone I've talked to was amazed that someone would put a left-threaded thermocouple on a water heater. The plumber tried to be polite about it but was really frustrated with the design of the front panel - and after taking it apart myself, so am I. It's very difficult to unscrew the nuts because of the shoddy design, and the plumber and I both got cut on the very sharp edge of the main gas supply. If you search online you'll also find a wealth of complaints about various parts failing prematurely and additional design flaws.I ordered the retrofit kit from Lowe's for $58 (with next-day shipping - that was $19.99). This is just to provide enough hot water to wash the stink of American Water Heater off of me until my new water heater is installed next week. I'm a young first time homeowner with a lot of houses in my future - and none of them will ever use an American Water Heater product again.

Just like a lot of other people, I bought a Whirlpool hot water tank because of the good name. And just like the other people, my tank's pilot light will not stay on, it will be on for a few days and then you get up and no hot water.

Bought a brand new 40 gal water heater from Lowe's. Installed it and it worked fine. Next day no hot water... After doing all the tests with tech support. This smart mouthed CSR explained to me how her uncle is a master plumber and she knows what she's talking about. Still couldn't tell me what was causing it to not work. Other than the reset being tripped. I have had good luck with Whirlpool products. But customer service has always been poor.

Bought Whirlpool 30 gal propane water heater in Feb, it lasted until May before the unit died. Paid for the extended plan warranty (NEVER do that!). Called support and they said they could send someone out in a little over a week (week with no hot water). The week goes by and on the day it was suppose to be repaired the guy calls and says his van broke down (this was a Friday, getting that early weekend). The earliest they can reschedule is in another week (over 2 weeks no hot water). Called Lowe's to see if I can just return it (extended plan and all), no, you need a return code from the whirlpool customer support. Call the Whirlpool number again to ask for a return code, no, it is a repairable problem (even though no one will come repair it). Lesson learned, will never buy Whirlpool or anything over $50 from Lowe's again.

Purchased and installed a Bradford White water heater on 12/3/2020 and found out on 1/11/2021 (had to call a plumber) that we had a bad part (T&P valve), the plumber purchased a new valve and installed it for $350. When I contacted the Bradford White warranty department I found out (like other reviews stated) they will not deal with the actual consumer who paid all original costs plus repair cost, they will only deal with the contracted plumber through the supplier (Ferguson, as an example). So I am out $350 for something that should have been covered by Bradford White, this is not right!

I bought a Rheem water heater in May 2017 from Home Depot. 7 months later it failed right on Christmas Eve. I called Rheem and the warranty part was sent quickly, but since they could not find any contractor in my area to do the work, they said I can use anyone local. I filled out the warranty claim and sent all the required paperwork back on Jan 2nd, 2018. First they said it'll take 6 - 8 weeks to process the claim. It's now 2 1/2 month (March 16th, 2018) and my claim was still not processed. The last time I've called, I was told that they were back-up in the warranty claim department (wow... imagine how many units have failed that could create such a "back-up"), but since it's more than 8 weeks, they'll "expedite" my claim. Guess what, expedite or not, my claim is still in limbo somewhere. Very disappointed with how Rheem handles customer claim. No wonder no contractor in my area wants to work with Rheem. People, please don't buy Rheem, not worth it when you have to be hold 45 minutes on the phone with them or call them every month to check on your warranty claim just to hear the same excuse.
